Martial Arts Hapkido

I have no clue what I am doing martial arts wise?

You see it goes like this. I only trained in sun bi hapkido and some of the marine corps martial arts that my father has taught me. I was also taught pressure points that cause the muscles to spaz out and disable the opponent temporarily. Currently I am with out a master and when I spar with my local friends I tend to incorporate everything I've learned into that one little skirmish. I have also noticed that I do a palm like strike ever so often and it actually at one point dislocated my friends shoulder.
What I am trying to ask here is that what am I doing exactly? My stance when in a skirmish is to have one arm semi out palm open and my other arm tucked in palm open facing up. I tend to mostly use my hands now to make these palm strikes and do my normal kicks along with closed fisted back hands. To be honest I have a sense of what I am doing but not certain and somehow I win these little skirmishes.

Recognition of the vastness of one's own ignorance is the first step on the road to true wisdom!

Now that you KNOW that you don't know, find a sensei who does.

Hapkido, and the reason it is unique from other Martial Arts

The world of Martial Arts does not seem unfamiliar as Jackie Chan, Jet Li or Bruce Lee say about it. The point that we often don’t get is that, we have our individual expertise that solely includes our inclination and not the application that we forcefully arm to ourselves.

Hapkido employs the use of tradition (abuse not permissible) like weaponry that include nunchuku, cane, sword, staff and short stick , as others involve self-defense through common unskilled attacks, techniques and joint locks the same way it does.

Hapkido is however unique with the utilization of longer pressure point ranges and strikes of percussive kicking and hand movements and closer throw fighting techniques. The motions and movements it employs can be circular, non-resisting or control of the opponent. Its observance of body positioning and footwork for better leverage, advantage and gain, has to be a mindset.

Hapkido is an art of fusion between the mental and physical powers of individuals for full integration and better strength of mind and body. With its style, it’s the so-called the softer kind in the sense that it does not employ strength against strength or force against force. It is simply about size and strength, not strength and strength. In short, it is the peaceful diversion or suppression of the flow of attacks; it does use only very little strength on pressure points and skeletal joints for a winning bout.

The sport talks about redirection of the attack not just to avoid further and more ones but, to control and turn the attack back through offensive techniques. Any “hard” damage is yet prevented here while it pushes through improvement of confidence, quickness, flexibility and timing, posture and balance, joint strength and muscle tone.

Hapkido does involve the welfare and development of each practitioner through practice and discipline. In same way with the other “hard” styles, attitude must be well observed when engaging with this. In whatever instance, it is yet the prime key to a practitioner’s first or last victory together with personality.

Why wait then for the focus of the “hard” styles to hit you when you can distinguish the softer yet more comfortable art of hapkido from the others? Try your luck with it! Who knows? You are the much-awaited hapkido king not just in your country or continent but in the whole universe?

Volume 2 is good, but not as good as volume 1

by Thomas O. Morrison from Ogdensburg, NY United States on 2007-11-05
Volume 2 (about 1 hour)Defense vs Grappling (actually it is defenses vs 2 handed standing chokes) - techniques 1-16 Defenses vs Holds (2 handed lapel grabs) - techniques 17-20 Defense vs Throws (and 2 handed chokes) - techniques 21-29 Ground Defense (def vs Mount) - techniques 30-31 Defense vs 2 attackers - techniques 32-35 Initiative Attacks - techniques 36-56 Cane - techniques 57-62 Dan Bong - techniques 63-70 Knife Defenses - techniques 71-88 Gun Defenses - techniques 89-91 Arresting Techniques (belt techniques) - techniques 92-95 Women's Self Defense - techniques 96-100Volume 2 seems to me to be more like a continuation of what was started in volume one and then has the feel of having several categories "bolted on" to fill up the tape. This tape in general contains a lot more material that seems a bit impractical for "self defense". There are less close ups, less descriptions, and a very loose sense of organization. The partner who gets the techniques applied to him is very annoying with his screams and moans, even during the slow speed demonstrations. However, as an overall catalog of Hapkido material it is very valuable, showing the diversity of the art and providing a "teaser' for people who may be interesting in learning this art. Some quibbles I have based on my own opinion include:-The categories like "Defense vs Grappling, Holds, and Ground Defense" would seem to address a need to address the range of ground grappling. However, it doesn't. The categories cover standing material like chokes and lapel grabs and only the ground defense category has the defender on the ground, where he uses two basic defenses against the mount and his partner obviously leaps off him without much effort on the defender's part.-The defenses against two attackers were very unrealistic, usually using a side kick to remove the first one from the picture and then turning the defender's back on that first one to attack the other. The partners are very compliant and throw themselves with the slightest movement.-The "Sun Sool" or "Initiative Attack" was pretty good for learning basics but then again, it's very easy to walk up and apply techniques to a compliant partner. Generally nice material though.-The cane and dan bong material was very short although I like the dan bong drill.-The knife defense wasn't particularly impressive and the defender showed very little or no control of the weapon and only defended against long telegraphed lunges for the most part.-The gun defense seemed okay although in some spots the defender brought the barrel in front of himself as he twisted and turned the opponent around.-The women's techniques seemed like a quick add on and was composed mainly of throws, many of which seemed to allow the smaller woman to propel the opponent using quick and easy grabs. Not exactly the material I'd teach for a smaller opponent to use against a large one.Overall, I wasn't as impressed with volume 2 as I was with volume 1. Volume 2 has the feel of an extended demo video with much more compliant partners and "flashy" techniques. It is nice in its diversity of material although it could have been better organized. I'd recommend this volume on those merits though especially since the price is fairly low and as part of set it makes a nice catalog for Hapkido techniques.

Super Hapkido

by SF Troop from Oklahoma on 2007-08-28
Hapkido Essentials and the two Hapkido Self Defense volumes are great for technique review. These products are good for those individuals that are now training or having had some previous experience in Hapkido or other similar Korean martial arts. It is difficult to see the hand positions for many of the techniques. Other than that you will see super rolling, throwing, blocking, locking, rotation, and flexion.

An outstanding video on Korean hapkido

by Toronto_Matt from Toronto, Canada on 2007-01-05
I once wrote a harsh review of the "Hapkido Vol.1", the videotape made by Lee Chang Soo and the Jin Jung Kwan hapkido demonstration team. I stand by the criticisms of that video. It was therefore a completely unexpected surprise to me that this DVD produced by the same people would be so well done in contrast to the earlier video series. The filming is far superior. We are shown each technique approximately 3 times; normal speed, slowly, normal speed and we are given a little information session about every 5 techniques or so to bring attention to a fine point. It is very clear visually and impressively performed. The weak point of the earlier series was that things were presently unrealistically and at such a speed that one could not hope to understand what was going on technically or even sometimes catch what technique was performed. This is not the case at all here. Although there is a great number of techniques presented here approximately 100 if memeory serves. quite a bang for the buck. This is not a video for someone who has never practised hapkido or another jointlocking based martial art. Rather it is an interesting overview the curriculum of self defense techniques of what was previously one of the more important Korea Hapkido Federation schools. (They have since separated and formed their own federation.)If you study hapkido this could be a great tool for you to have to assist you in jarring the old memory banks concerning the details of an art with a truly vast curriculum. This video does not teach you the techniques and really one should not really be attempting to learn an martial art from a videotape anyway. However the videotape could have had a lot more detailed and better quality narration to bring a greater understanding of the fine points of the techniques. If you had the sound turned off you would lose nothing in terms of insight regarding this video. This holds this DVD back from scoring more highly.Where this DVD really scores is in the execution and breadth of the techniques displayed. They are performed by Kim Myung Yong one of the senior-most hapkido teachers around. If you train hapkido and you are looking for something to suppliment you knowledge of the wide hapkido curriculum this DVD will be just the ticket. If you don't study hapkido but have trained in jointlocking and throwing arts before you will find much of interest on this DVD. If you are thinking about trying to learn techniques from media this is definitely not the item for you.I think that others who may dislike this DVD are probably people who would dislike hapkido or any other martial art which relies heavily on jointlock and throwing responses to self defense situations such as aikido, Japanese jujutsu, judo or Chinese Chin Na. If hapkido is your thing than this is the thing is for you. This and Master Jung Tae's "Ultimate Hapkido" series are the strongest videos available thus far on the Korean art of hapkido.

by stories60 from on 2005-07-13
these techniques will work in real life situations when appropriately applied. those who criticize the moves as "fantasy" or "fiction" do so only in ignorance. while the techniques are sometimes hard to see, if you have experience in the martial arts and hap-ki-do, this series will definitely be of help to you.

Excellent series

This DVD is one out of an outstanding series produced on Hapkido. This is probably one of the best on the subject. It shows a variety of techniques from a variety of angles.

Description

Back Kick is the first volume in the extremely well written and fully illustrated, Achieving Kicking Excellence series of martial arts related books. Back Kick, along with the other nine volumes in the Achieving Kicking Excellence series, goes into intricate detail over all aspects of executing the primary kick, which in this case is the Turning Back Kick, and several of its main variations. Starting with a basic anatomical analysis of this kick, you quickly progress to the basic principles associated with the Back Kick, and then you dive right into learning the proper execution of the primary kick, Turning Back Kick. Once you have finished with this section, you are taken to the variations chapter which builds upon the primary kick, Turning Back Kick, by teaching you 11 of its main variations. From here you are taken to the Training and Practice Methods chapter for a look at some very simple, yet effective methods for adding speed and power to your kicks. Your next chapter takes a question and answer approach to some of the most common problems people have executing the Back Kick and the solutions to correct them. The next chapter in this book deals with a very brief and basic application section for the Back Kick and each of the variations previously detailed in this book. NOTE: The combat/self-defense applications of the Back Kick are discussed and demonstrated in much greater detail in the companion book to this book, Back Kick: Achieving Kicking Excellence; Volume 1, which is Back Kick: Applications in Combat: Achieving Kicking Excellence; Volume 11. This book goes into intricate detail over all aspects of applying the primary kick, which in this case is the Back Kick, and several of its main variations, against twelve of the most common attacks that you are most likely to face in an actual unarmed self-defense/combat situation. At the conclusion of this book you are given a sneak preview of the next volume in the Achieving Kicking Excellence series, which in this case is the Wheel Kick.

Practical, Detailed, Scholarly and Essential

by Kevin Brett from Stafford, VA on 2009-09-07
Volume I: Back Kick in Shawn's Achieving Kicking Excellence series starts from the ground up. Shawn literally begins with human anatomy 101 from the foot, legs, hips, both skeletal and muscular structures that are used to form the kick. He has written an incredibly scholarly work. When I first heard that a martial artist had written 10 volumes on kicking - each on a different core martial arts kick, I thought, yeah - right. How much can you say about any one kick? I thought, there isn't that much knowledge in the universe about kicking that could fill 240 or so pages, even with pictures! Well I was wrong. What is so amazing about this book and the others in the series is that Shawn has created an easy to follow format that is also very easy to read. I very quickly found myself lost in the details of this book - wanting to absorb as much as I could. I've been teaching martial arts for more than 20 years and yet I never really thought about how much information an instructor might pass on to a student about any particular kick. Each day we cover a few more details and finer points with our students. What Shawn has done a magnificent job of here is capturing, structuring, packaging and synthesizing in one volume, everything a martial artist needs to know about a given kick. If you're going to practice for hundreds of hours, performing thousands of kicks, you need to get it right and understand what you're doing. This goes for the back kick, the side kick or any of the other kicks that Shawn covers in his other volumes. If you take the time to assimilate this easy to read book, practice the various concepts, drills and stretches, then you will be learning correct kicking from a true master of the art! I highly recommend this book. I have been involved in martial arts for a long time and yet still found a wealth of excellent material; some new to me and some which I already understood. Whether you are a sixth degree black belt or a white belt, this book will serve you as an excellent companion throughout your studies. This book proves that, no matter how long we may have been studying or teaching, there is still more knowledge out that that can help us improve and that we are still always white belts inside.Buy it! Enjoy it! and you will begin achieving kicking excellence!Kevin Brett: Author The Way of the Martial Artist: Achieving Success in Martial Arts and in Life!

Everything you ever needed to know about kicking

by James S. Holley from on 2009-07-02
I have been practicing the martial arts since the age of 14. This year will mark the 40th year that I've studied one system of combat or another. Additionally, I have been a police officer for 31 years and my profession has occasionally offered me the opportunity to use the thingS that I've learned in the Dojo. I have an entire set of Shawn Kovacich's superb series on Achieving Kicking Excellence (Vol. 1- 10) and can truthfully say that I have seen no more thorough books on the art of kicking in the all my years in the martial arts. The kicks covered (one per volume) include the back kick, the heel kick, the axe kick, the crescent kick, the reverse crescent kick, the front kick, the hook kick, the hatchet kick, the round house kick, and the side kick. Each volume begins with an overview of the kick and instructions on how to make the best possible use of the kick. Chapter 1 delves into the anatomy of the kick and which muscles are used, and in what manner, to achieve the maximum possible efficiency in kicking. Chapter 2 outlines a stretching program and offers helpful tips in that area for the student. Chapter 3 deals with the basic principles of kicking movement. These include the striking implement, target areas, stability (a biggie!), balance, alignment, sequence of movement, accuracy. Strength, speed, timing and distance, impact, retraction, and visualization. Each area is explained in detail as it relates to developing your kicking ability. Chapter 4 deals exhaustively with the primary kick. It follows the kick from initiation through each phase of the kick to impact, recoil, and recovery. He troubleshoots the problems that many martial artists experience with the kick at each phase and offers corrective actions for each problem. Chapter 5 goes over pretty much every variation of the kick known to man and these are dissected with master Kovacich's usual thoroughness. Chapter 6 is one of the strongest parts of the book for me. In this chapter, Master Kovacich discusses training and practice methods. He details skill, strength, speed, and power training. Learning how to do the kick is only half the battle. Developing the kick through specific training methods and exercises is the other half and is usually overlooked by other authors. As if he hadn't already done enough in this area, Master Kovacich outlines further specific trouble areas for the student in chapter 7. Chapter 8 covers kicking applications for tournament and street.. Master Kovacich shows how the kick is set up and how delivery can be affected by your opponent's actions as well as your own. In chapter 9 you can see why Master Kovacich's kicks are so good and why you should pay attention to his advice. He is in the Guiness Book of World records for throwing more high kicks in an afternoon that I believe I have thrown in my life. If you desire to become a more powerful, competent kicker, then these books represent an important investment for you . I can tell you that, even after 40 years of fighting experience, there are things in these books that have made me re-think some of my training methods regarding kicking. Master Kovacich will be coming out with a new series of books dealing with the combat applications of each kick in the near future. As I'm sure these books will cover combat applications with the same thoroughness of this series, I eagerly await their publishing.

Super book

by Loren w Christensen from Portland, Oregon on 2009-06-26
For many students, the back kick, especially the turning back kick, can be a real challenge to learn and to perfect. Done well, the kick is arguably one of the most beautiful to behold and, with little argument, one of the strongest in the martial arts.Shawn Kovacich's fine book, Achieving Kicking Excellent: Back Kick, is a tremendous source to guide you on the path of having the best back kick of which you are capable. Shawn is a long-time martial artist with an amazing history that includes competing in brutal full-contact tournaments, setting world records for the Guinness Book of Records (11,000 high kicks in 5 hours) and applying his fighting skill for real virtually every night as a bouncer in some of the toughest joints around. It should be noted that this book is just one of many in which Shawn Kovacich shares his knowledge of his kicking ability. Just keyword "Achieving Kicking Excellence" and you will find a variety of kicking books like nothing else on the market. In the Back Kick text, Shawn has crammed the book with solid information that every martial artist needs to make his or her kick absolute dyno-mite. If you favor lots of photos, you will find that in this easy-to-follow text. If you like lots of detail as to what all makes this kick work, you'll find that in this book, too. It truly is a book for every reader.Back Kick includes lots of exercises - weights and free-hand - that when followed for just a few months will develop all the specific muscles needed to develop your power, speed and accuracy of the straight back kick, turning back kick and all the other variations.Achieving Kicking Excellence Back Kick will improve your kick, maybe even make you a master of it.I've been training, teaching and writing about the martial arts since 1965, and I highly recommend this book.Loren W. A Master Athlete and Teacher Shares His Art

by Grady Harp from Los Angeles, CA United States on 2009-05-23
Shawn Kovacich is a committed, highly regarded and honored practitioner of martial arts with a specialization in Kicking. Yet not satisfied to have achieved the degree of excellence in his craft, Kovacich has devised a series of books that extend beyond the usual 'self-help' category of writing. His considerably cautious eye and sense of balance, in sport and in life, has resulted in his publishing a series of books - ACHIEVING KICKING EXCELLENCE - that at this point are ten in number but promise in the near future to be doubled in amount. Each of these books, handsomely designed and with excellent photographic illustrations, takes one type of kick at a time and explore not only the development of that kick, but also inform the student reader the kinesiology of that kick as well as slowly advising how to develop and master that kick. Most books on martial arts fall into one of two categories: some are written in a format that is beyond the understanding of the reader who may be completely new to martial arts while others dumb down the reader with superficial 'quick fix' problems thinking the reader is already proficient in the fundamentals of Martial Arts. Kovacich respects his reader/pupil, and with great dignity of writing style and unfolds each kick mastery with surety of developmental skill and encouragement of each aspect of a single movement. This allows the reader who may be proficient in Kicking to buy just the one book written for the type of Kick the reader finds difficult to master: buying the entire set of books assures the reader that each stage of development will be respected from the beginning to the mastery of the ten Kicks Kovacich addresses. Each of these ten volumes is equally excellent. The ten volumes include Back Kick, Roundhouse Kick, Front Kick, Side Kick, Crescent Kick, Reverse Crescent Kick, Hook Kick, Wheel Kick, Axe Kick and Hatchet Kick. Having exposure to each of these ten volumes gathers respect for Shawn Kovacich not only as a man who is able to master a tough medium of sport, but also one who has discovered the perfect manner of teaching and communication. The ten volume set is well worth the investment, monetarily and educationally. Grady Harp, May 09

Reusable Breakable Karate Board

by Susan A. Miguenes from Tampa, FL on 2010-08-24
I bought the yellow rebreakable Karate Board for my son who is a yellow belt. It was a little hard to reassemble the first few times, but then we had no trouble putting it back together. He takes it everywhere so he can show off his skill. We recommend it!

SAVE A TREE!!!

by Eduard Abelmasov from Brooklyn, NY United States on 2008-06-19
I expected that yellow board would be easy to break, so my 6 year old son would train his kiks and the board would be indicator that he hit the right spot and hit it strong enough. The board is not easy to break. It is OK for adult probably. Connecting the parts back requires adult. Child cannot do it. Nevertheless the idea itself is very good. It saves many trees. I would recommend this board maybe for those who is over 12-13 years old.

Not too bad

by Chickie P. from Exton, PA on 2008-10-29
I wasn't completely bowled over by this CD, but it was OK. I had it in my car and listened to it while driving, but I found that it was difficult to decipher some of the words in Korean. The translator went very slowly and repeated the pronunciation a few times, but there were a number of words that I just couldn't hear very well.I think it would be more beneficial to have a printed sheet with all of the terms, so you could follow along - that may have been more helpful.

Nice Tool

This is a nice cd to help augment the korean language taught at the Dojan. I play it on my drive to work and home, this way it keeps the term fresh in my mind.
