Review of Martial Arts Games for Kids

With both a martial arts background and a degree in Physical Education, I admit to being skeptical when I read Martial Arts Games for Kids by Aaron Perry. I found some excellent games for education and maintaining student interest, loyalty and promotion of your martial arts school. I also found some points in the book I believe could be improved. Read on  ....

The Writing Itself

I have to admit, I've been in sales related fields over 30 years. Aaron Perry knows how to write good sales copy. Not only that, he has the martial arts knowledge and the ability to transfer his knowledge and experience to his fellow martial arts instructors. I believe this skill was taken into consideration as he developed these martial arts games to help ensure learning, loyalty and even advertising via word of mouth and game days amongst his students and his students guests.

I Kept a Suspicious Attitude As I Read Martial Arts Games for Kids

With a background in physical education, I'm very picky about games being associated with the activity, in this case martial arts. When my son was six, I took him to observe several martial arts schools and observed the children's classes. Every single one of the martial arts classes for children did the same thing.

* Warm-ups unrelated to martial arts or self-defense training. By the way one of my methods of teaching physical education classes stated children have such a high metabolism they do not technically need to “warm-up” before engaging in a physical activity.

* Relay races of various types unrelated to martial arts or self-defense training. In these relay races students spent most of their time standing behind another student looking at the back of his or her head than they did engaging in or watching the activity. So much for any benefit of observation.

* The last fifteen minutes or so were spent executing actual martial arts drills. Unfortunately, per my sales experience, it's the last 15 minutes the parents remembered, thus remained satisfied with their child's progress. I cannot state for certain the parents remained satisfied as I never inquired about the martial arts schools turn around or retention rate.

As both a professional educator and parent, I was appalled at what I considered to be a waste of time for the students as well as a waste of financial and time investment for the parents.

I Admit to Becoming Impressed As I Read Martial Arts Games for Kids

I realized Mr. Perry took associating a game with the activity he was trying to promote, martial arts, seriously in his book.

Martial Arts Games for Kids include games to increase:

Physical Condition
Coordination
Strength
Balance
Accuracy
Techniques
Stances

The sections were divided similar to public school lessons plans. Each martial arts game explains

* Number of players
* Equipment
* Procedure
* Modification suggestions
* Benefits of the martial arts game

He even includes a frequently asked questions section along with advice on how to slowly incorporate games into your martial arts schools curriculum. There's martial arts school marketing suggestions such as game day. Students bring a friend for this naturally and Mr. Perry offers a way to control the number of people who show up for this promotional event.

When I Finished Reading Martial Arts Games for Kids

I admit I was impressed. However, all lesson plans and activities could be improved upon. For example, Mr. Perry made no mention of having smaller groups to increase actual activity. I would have also liked to have seen mention forming any lines need for the activity in such a way as students could observe their fellow students participating.

Note to Those Who Believe Martial Arts and Games Should Not Be Combined

Our goal as educators, is to transfer knowledge to our students. Games is an effective tool in achieving this goal. Games are used in all types of classroom and physical topics to enable and reinforce learning.

Whether or not your students take martial arts seriously does not depend on whether or not you play a game which your students may enjoy. Games are only and should only be a part of your martial arts schools curriculum.

Whether or not your students take martial arts seriously and do not abuse the knowledge which you transfer to them, depends on you and your attitude, not whether or not you allow them to enjoy their lessons in a variety of ways, thus wanting to continue to learn even more.

Description

In the first half of the book Gaku Homma gives a very detailed and convincing account of how he came to the martial arts (and aikido in particular), and how this has shaped his practice as a teacher. He gives many examples of conversations he's had with parents who want to enroll their kids in his classes, which serve to illustrate many of the wrong reasons parents want children to participate in martial arts. In the second half, he gives examples of many of the exercises children in his aikido classes perform, accompanied by black-and-white line drawings.

Well written, easy understanding book with good illustrations. highly recommended by my sensei for those serious about their art!

Wish this was reprinted

by CDD from on 2009-06-05
Gaku Homma and his work on aikido and budo in general is a treasure, and this book is no exception. There is so much in this book for any person interested in Aikido, Japanese culture, or education. Homma-sensei uses personal history, principles, and experience to share so much of what aikido has to offer in modern times. I truly wish this book would be reprinted, and that Homma-sensei had an opportunity to finish this Structure of Aikido series of textbooks. Bottom line, if you are a teacher of any subject or a parent, regardless of whether or not you are interested in the martial arts, this book is a must read.

una buena herramienta para ayudar al crecimiento de los niños

by Gustavo Giachino from argentina on 2006-06-25

Very Helpful

There are not alot of books out there about teaching the Martial Arts to children especially for Aikido so I really appreciated the point of view from Gaku Homma. The books was insightful in some of the ways you must deal with parents and also his training practices.

A Fun Video

by Happy2BAMom from on 2010-08-22
My seven year old son wanted to learn Kung Fu after watching Kung Fu Panda a zillion times. He totally enjoyed this video. It held his attention.Parents, before spending money on Kung Fu lessons (and Tae Kwon Do too) with ironclad overpriced contracts, let your child enjoy this affordable video for fun and exercise. If he or she's still mesmerized by the the martial arts form after six months or so, then try a martial arts class.

Kung Fu in the Classroom!!!

by stuffedmango from Utah, USA on 2010-08-05
As a classroom teacher, I whole-heartedly recommend this DVD. You cannot go wrong with this one whether you buy it for yourself, your kids, your grandkids, or especially for the classroom.I set aside 15-20 minutes daily in the morning for physical exercise with my second graders. While the weather is good, we walk the track, but during the winter, I have to get creative. This DVD was perfect!!The kids loved it! They were so energized and ready for the day not to mention that it helped increase self-confidence for some of my kids. They just felt so "cool."Kung Fu for Kids breaks each exercise down into bite-size chunks and so that even those who can't chew gum and walk at the same time (me) will be able to follow the step-by-step instructions. After the easy to understand instructions, there is a full round of workout with that particular move. You choose the area you want to work on whether it's punches, kicks, etc.I especially liked the cultural notes included at the end of the DVD. The fact that youths are the Kung Fu models make it all the more appealing and doable.The kids also loved the graphics and would ask to do a workout with the Kung Fu star graphic. Crazy, but funny.If you have any doubts about getting this, just know this, it will be money well-spent, get it!!

Lots of Fun!

Kung Fu for Kids is a great way to get the kids moving and learning! It offers step by step instruction for beginners and offers more detailed instruction for older kids that want to delve a little deeper. I think mom and dad will enjoy the workout, too!

Yes to Kung Fu for kids

I purchased this for my 8 year old boy. My older son took classes at a local place about 7 years ago. This video provides the same information and tehnics as we received then. It is very good. You can go at your own pace. Glad I purchased it.

Kung fu for kids who watched the Karate Kid

by Zenpony from on 2010-06-14
This is a great workout dvd for all the little kids that just came from the movies watching "The Karate Kid". This is real Kung Fu taught by real teachers. Kids love to punch and kick, jump and block. My small granddaughter came into the room as I was watching this DVD and she was able to follow right along. She is only four, but I teach taiji in my dojo so she is familiar with some of the movements. It was a workout for me too! She followed along the entire first set where the kids were practicing routines and lost interest at the end of the series where senior student were given corrections and instruction.This will be a wonderful introduction to the basics of kung fu for those millions of kids who will go to the movies and want to be the next Master. I would think it work work really well for kids in the elementary school grades.The only technical flaw that I saw was the instructor placed himself in the middle of the group of children in the first section of the dvd. This caused the two young kids in the front to have to turn their heads to look at him in order to follow along. It threw them off balance.Buy this for your young kids and grand kids and then do it with them! No more couch potatoes!

They are great for slight parkour

by Francisco Ramirez from on 2010-08-05
I bought them for parkour, and the grip is very good. But, these are not generally good for a lot of running since they have literally no support. I tried putting a support insole, but since the shoe is too low, and also i got a size bigger the insole pushed my foot out. I got size 44 because im 9.5, but it was a little big. I would have gotten a 43, but they didnt have it in stock. I tied the shoelaces tight and put a thin insole in, and it worked. So I would recommend it for parkour, but with an insole, and dont run or jog too much in these because you WILL DESTROY your ankles. Also, a little hard to get used to since it has a ball shaped outsole. But worth checking out since they are cheap. Be careful about the size though.

Only one problem. One shoe was missing an eyelet, but was not worth effort to have replaced.

Sneaky Sneakers

I love these shoes! They're soft and comfy and I wear them EVERYWHERE. I got them to do Tai Chi but found myself wearing them all around. They're snug to my feet but flexible and the sole are extra grippy.

Shoe is great

this shoe has one of the best fits i have ever felt, like a sock. the grip is good but will wear away fast if you are climbing up walls.

Truly a magical experience

by East West Follower 1 from East West on 2009-06-05
What started out as a way to kill a saturday night has truly changed my life. I thought a couple of Natty Lights and an old VHS would be the high point of the weekend, and then i was transported to a magical world of positive energy and ninja skills. This video is not just for children! It can unlock the treasure chest of golden dragon that waits inside each of you! I now have a lifes purpose and the watermelons of the world do not stand a chance now that i have unlocked my non-violent positve energy that can slice through them like a flaming hawk! Buy this move and let the revolution begin!

Not any magic here!

I really couldn't believe I bought this video. Based on the reviews it sounded pretty good. Well, as an experienced martial artist and instructor (40+ years)I have to say that this video is a bad joke. It is the most ridiculous piece of junk I've ever viewed. The best advice for children offered up in this cartoon is to 'run away.' Sound advice yes-- but the rest of the content is pure junk. Don't waste a penny on this one. Take your children to a dojo but realize that any child will be hard pressed to perform the techniques they will learn. Teach them to be aware of their surroundings. The best defense for a child? Run and scream.This video is bad. Period.

A little silly

My five year old son thought this was a little silly. There's a lot of singing and not much instruction about how to do karate. He watched it once and did not enjoy it at all. We returned it and got him Kung Fu Panda instead. He enjoys fighting along with the Furious Five.
