Distance Learning and Martial Arts

Advances in technology have popularized martial arts to an impressive level. Now, through the internet and DVD, you can actually learn nuances of accomplished martial arts in the privacy of your own sweet home. However, there are a lot of debate is going on whether learning through DVDs and internet makes the real sense or not.

Practically, if you choose to learn martial arts from internet or DVD, you will not get practical demonstrations of moves. It is true that the DVDs’ will be carrying moves but when you see it and practice is a different experience. In addition, learning through internet or any other media will help you to save your precious time usually spent in commuting from one place to another. You can set your own timings of learning and practicing your online martial arts. Watch carefully and try moves to gain expertise in your neighborhood. Traditional class schedule is a costly means of learning martial arts whereas learning through internet and DVD’s is an economical way that doesn’t put too much strain on your pockets. Learning via internet or Karate DVD can help you to learn new techniques or specific moves that you wanted to learn for long now. Indeed, internet and Karate DVD training has encouraged an easy way to learn martial arts.

Karate DVD or learning from internet can be a great means to be in touch with your specific art form. When you’ve already earned a black belt through class schedule or proper coach training, you can buy reliable DVDs to practice your skills.

What is a good gift to get a kid who likes Karate/ Martial Arts?

Besides lessons or a uniform.

DO NOT GET HIM ANY SORT OF WEAPON, ESPECIALLY ANYTHING SHARP OR NUNCHUCKS, unless you want to be responsible for him hurting himself. I swear the irrisponsible ignorent answers on here.

Weapons need to be learned under a qualified instructor, period. Why don't we give monkeys loaded guns? Because commen sense says it's not a good idea.

If the kid likes to read, a good book is always an option. I do not know how old the child in question is, so it's really hard to say. Just make sure the book is age appropriate.

Movies are also a good bet, again keeping the childs age in mind.

It is really hard to say without knowing the age of the child.

Documentario eccellente, ottima fotografia.

Peaceful and Beautiful documentary about Japanese martial arts

by Alain B. Burrese from Missoula, MT on 2009-08-19
I really enjoyed "Budo: The Art of Killing." I usually watch and review instructional videos, and it was a nice change to watch this documentary on the martial arts of Japan. One thing that really stands out is the beauty of Japan that is shown throughout the film. Seeing some of the scenic settings reminded me of places I visited while living in Japan, and how there are so many beautiful and peaceful places in the land of the rising sun. It's not a fast paced DVD, with some scenes in slow motion with slower music, but that added to the beauty of the film.Peace and beauty in a film about the art of killing? Yes, and I found the relationship between the two to be calming and reflected on some of my own training. Seeing some of the masters train with Mt. Fuji in the background, on beaches, or in other aesthetically pleasing places (most dojos are simple elegance) or the scenes in fields or forests, made me think of how often it is my training in martial arts that calms me and becomes the most serene time of the day. Meditation and physical training go together. The training scenes in the film are not instructional. You are not going to learn how to do the things you see from this film. Nor does the film elaborate on the training that got the people in the film to that point other than saying it takes a long time and much dedication. However, watching this can motivate one to pursue their training to reach the higher levels. For those interested in the various martial arts of Japan, this DVD serves as a nice introduction. You get to see people training in Judo, Karate, Sumo, Aikido, and more. The section with women training with the naginata will be interesting for females to see the samurai art practiced by women of all ages. There was also a lot of time spent on the sword, which the Japanese samurai are known for. Besides seeing some masters of the sword, the film shows a blade being made as well. I was surprised that the Ninja and Ninjitsu were not covered.Overall, I enjoyed this DVD, just as I enjoy reading the older Samurai writings that have been translated to English, and books about the samurai, ancient Japan, Korea, China, and related works. If you are interested in an artful film about the martial arts and beauty of Japan, you will enjoy this film.Reviewed by Alain Burrese, J.D., author of Hard-Won Wisdom From the School of Hard Knocks and the dvds: Hapkido Hoshinsul, Streetfighting Essentials, Hapkido Cane, the Lock On Joint Locking Essentials series and articles including a regular column on negotiation for The Montana Lawyer. Alain Also wrote a series of articles called Lessons From The Apprentice.

GREAT!!!

by Brandon K. Thompson from on 2008-05-21
This dvd was exactly what I thought it would be, a comprehensive view of all of the major martial arts of Japan: karate, kendo, iaido, judo, sumo, Okinawa kobudo, and yabusame(archery on horseback). Anyone serious of martial arts should have a copy of this dvd.

Yogi toes

by yaadi2 from on 2010-08-02
I was pleasantly surprised to see that I received 3 pairs of the stick-e socks, what a great deal! The only thing that I can say is the padding on the bottom can sometimes crack and eventually peels off.

I was thrilled to get the yoga socks! but when I went to put them on I realized they were not a pair but two left foot socks. Needless to say I have not worn them after the first time at class as they just do not work.

Love my sticky socks....

by Flush Barrett-Browning from Tennessee Valley on 2010-03-14
I must have gotten a good pair of Stick-e Brands Yoga Stick-e Socks because I've had no problems with them at all. They fit well (once I learned the best way of getting the right toes in the right holes) and they've been through the washer several times and held up quite well. And they do stick. I have sweaty feet and this is a great solution for keeping my feet in place. An added bonus is that they keep my feet warm on days the studio is saving money on heat.

Not Durable

by Sammie from Colorado on 2010-02-18
This product works very well, but doesn't hold up. I bought two pairs, and both started falling apart after about the fourth yoga class! The sticky stuff cracked and then started coming off in pieces. The socks were far too expensive to be crumbling the first week.

Karate-Do

by adam lambert from CHICO, CA, US on 2010-09-03
Like the rest of these reviews say, this an excellent play by play book with high quality detailed photos and descriptive instructions. I am a strength and conditioning coach and work primarily with MMA fighters, reading these detailed accounts of technique and movement patterns has been a big part of writing successful programming for fighters. A great read for any trainer wanting a better understanding of his/her clients needs or a fighter who wants to add dimension to his stand up. Check out Glen Cordoza's Facebook page for photos from his fights and photo shoots from his other books. [...]

Machida Karate-Do Mixed Martial Arts Techniques

by Jessica Cardin from on 2010-09-02
Watching Machida's career through the years, he has his own unique style that has allowed him to defeat many opponents who were previously thought to be unbeatable. This book has elucidated that style that Machida has embodied and used to conquer his foes. The photographs are exquisite and allow the reader to see each detail in nearly "high-def" clarity. The descriptions allow the techniques to jump off of the page and to be incorporated into any training regime for people from the beginning stages of MMA training to the most experienced of fighters. The genius of Machida's style is utilizing older forms of karate and other various martial art styles which subtleties have been lost through the ages. Machida capitalizes on these and Victory Belt has made an excellent strive to discuss these techniques. This is an excellent source of information for anyone who wants an introduction to a great mixed martial artist or the basics of MMA.

LYOTO MACHIDA Machida Karate-Do Mixed Martial Arts Techniques by Glen Cordoza presented by Victory Belt © Marc Wickert February 21, 2010 [...]In Machida Karate-Do: Mixed Martial Arts Techniques, Lyoto Machida shares with readers the techniques that took him to the top of UFC's light-heavyweight pedestal. As the rear cover states, "Each chapter takes you deeper into the heart of MMA, uncovering a wide array of techniques from karate, sumo, wrestling, and Brazilian jiu-jitsu."The techniques included in this book have been battle tested and refined through the generations by the Machida family. Lyoto Machida, son of Yoshizo Machida, was awarded his karate black belt at 13, and has successfully incorporated Brazilian jiu-jitsu, wrestling, Muay Thai and sumo into his ultimate-fighting game to become one of the most successful UFC combatants in history, notching up an impressive 16-0-0 MMA record. And although "The Dragon's" cage-fighting style is somewhat unorthodox, Machida is the first athlete to dominate his division in the UFC with a traditional karate base.Machida Karate-Do: Mixed Martial Arts Techniques unveils a wide range of this UFC Champion's techniques, from stand-up to takedowns and submissions, as well as defense and escapes. This book is companion to the 4 DVD Box Set Machida-Do Karate for Mixed Martial Arts, and is an excellent publication for the novice or the elite practitioner, with all moves clearly illustrated from a variety of angles.Machida Karate-Do: Mixed Martial Arts Techniques covers seven main categories: Striking Attacks Intercepting Attacks The Clinch Attacking the Guard Attacks from Dominant Control The Guard EscapesStriking Attacks * Entering with kicks. * Entering with punches. * Foot sweeps and leg trips.Intercepting Attacks * Intercepting kicks. * Intercepting punches. * Takedown defense. The Clinch * Muay Thai clinch. * Attacks from neutral clinch. * Clinch defense.Attacking the Guard * Attacking the downed guard. * Attacking the full guard. * Attacking the half guard.Attacks from Dominant Control * Side control attacks. * Mount attacks. * Back attacks. The Guard * Closed and open guard. * Butterfly and half guard.Escapes * Escaping controls. * Submission defense.

Learning Martial Arts

by Joseph Cisneros from Chicago, IL USA on 2010-06-07
This is a solid overview of techniques for martial arts. It is a good guide to those who already have a foundation in karate/kickboxing. There are many techniques to learn and some have a good application for Mixed Martial Arts. This book is a well designed and easy to follow instructions. It has great illustrations to demonstrate stances, movement and form. A solid book for martial artist, and it is interesting to see karate applied to MMA where Muay Thai is dominant.

Great for my boys!

by Doofusdan from Seattle on 2009-12-05
My sons (5 & 8) and I are taking karate lessons, and after a few times trying to use sofa cushions as an improvised kick/punch target, we needed the real deal! This was a very good buy.Warning: this pad does not magically overcome the laws of physics (especially Newton's!) so if an 80lb boy kicks the shield when a 40lb boy is holding it - better have a clear space behind!

Quality piece!

by L. Owens from Weslaco, TX on 2009-03-10
The upholstering of this pad is amazing, and it has more handles than I can think of ways to use them! It's actually tougher than I need, but I like it so much and the price was so great, that I'm keeping it. There are even mesh vents at the bottom to let air out on impact. Definitely agree with the previous review: Superior product. Can't wait to see how it wears.

Better than i imagined.

This kick shield was MUCH better than the picture made it out to be. It was way beyond expectation!
