How to Slow Down or Completely Halt Your Martial Arts Training Progress

Over the years, I've seen very successful techniques in slowing down martial arts and self-defense training to an almost complete stop. I've listed some of these techniques below, perhaps you're already practicing some of these....

Yeahbutts

Note the double t. Now this is a very common highly used martial arts training slow down technique. I've seen tournament champions as well as martial art wannabees use it. Here's what you do....

As soon as a fellow martial artist, whether instructor or training partner begins explaining a technique, utilize a blank, yet polite stare, BUT DON'T ACTUALLY LISTEN. Actually listening has the detrimental potential of improving your martial arts skills. Remember, we're trying to avoid this in this article.

To further the technique only pretend to listen to about half of the explanation. Take the valuable time while the martial artist is explaining the technique to develop a reason that it won't work. This will save you from actually having to listen to the entire explanation of the martial arts technique and gives you more time to figure out a reason NOT  to add it to your repertoire. Sure sure you'll be hit by the technique since you don't train with it or against it, but similar techniques can be utilized to develop excuses why you were hit, there's no need to practice the technique. I assure you this would only speed up your martial arts training and improve your skills.

Remember, much like the namesake of this technique, always start your conversation after pretending to listen with

“Yeah but....”

Generalizations of Martial Arts and Martial Sports Styles

THIS will save you anywhere from hours to months of research in attempting to learn how other martial arts systems and martial arts sports such as boxing and mixed martial arts may utilize techniques differently and indeed utilize techniques you may not even know about or practice.

This technique works best when the person you're discussing the martial arts style or sport knows as little as you do about it.  I've seen this done quite successfully, let me assure you, it's a proven technique for slowing down your martial arts training. Here's how the technique works....

Pick a martial arts style or sport, let's say boxing. Start your time saving and research saving conversation like this,

“Here's what I'd do against a boxer....”

Now, it's important that you justify what you would do with further generalizations. Start this statement with this,

“Boxers always....”

NOW YOU'RE JUSTIFIED! See how much simpler that is than actually training with the martial arts style or sport? You've just saved yourself a great deal of time and progress. Now remember, if you accidentally do end up training with someone from another style and you get hit, don't worry, just utilize a variation of the yeahbutt technique to develop a reason you were hit. That way you won't have to train against that technique for which you have weak defenses.

Decisions Based on Short Experiences

This is different that generalizations since you did accidentally get a little experience with a style. This technique by the way has been developed almost to a science by a visually based observational nonphysically interactive type of martial artist commonly referred to as the “Monitor Martial Artist”.

This is a huge time saver! What the monitor martial artist does is watch a two to four minute online social video presentation and figure out how to sometimes not only defeat the martial artist in the video, BUT THE ENTIRE MARTIAL ARTS STYLE! Think about it! No need to actually develop interest in an alternate means of executing a technique. You just watch a couple minutes of video!

Here's how the technique works. It's best to use a social video media so you may build your self-esteem by commenting on the video. Watch,  a small portion of the two to four minute video, by utilizing above techniques there's no need to wait till the video is concluded to begin drawing conclusions. As soon as you see something you believe is negative in the video, stop the video, pull your keyboard from your drawer and begin typing this....

“In 2.24 he was completely wide open! I'd have....”

And that's it! You've now saved hours of time by posting questions inquiring about the technique in 2.24. No need to perform internet searches or even find people in your area available for practicing. The best part about this is the support you get from fellow Monitor Martial Artists! Thus your self-esteem has been boosted, you've gained comrades who think as you do, thus enabling this technique to execute an almost complete halt to improving your martial arts skills!

Conclusion

I believe you're starting to get the idea of how to utilize these martial arts training slow down techniques;

1. DO NOT have an open mind.
2. Pretend to listen just long enough to be polite.
3. Be negative as quickly as possible.
4. Generalize as much as possible.

Any single technique utilized here will have the benefit of slowing down your martial arts training. When combined, you can potentially become completely static in your training. You'll never have to worry about learning anything new again.

Great!

by Amy S. Widmer from McMinnville, OR on 2009-06-21
This DVD is great! There's a lot of instruction and explanation to make it clear and understandable. I am able to pause the DVD, practice, go back to make sure I'm doing it correctly, listen to the instructions, and practice again. I like it because so many other videos the instructor does it all and doesn't explain it very much so I end up just watching it like a movie. In this video, Loren Christensen is very knowledgable and I can tell by his explanations if I'm doing it right or not. It's a great video where I practice on my own and not have to wait for a partner. I'm a big fan of Loren Christensen and I like everything he does! I recommend it!

Poor Quality DVD

by Bob of CNY from Central NY on 2009-06-08
Having purchased his other book on Speed Training, I was eagerly awaiting this DVD.Well it was quite a disappointment. For the quality of the video and instruction, I was better off using YouTube. The video was very poor in showing the techniques, did not show different angles and at times when the female instructor was on the video you could not even see some of the moves. If you are a Christensen groupie then you should buy it. If you plan on using this as a part of solo training, once again you will find better for free off the internet and YouTube.Very disappointing.

Bruce Lee, the legend of martial arts and motion pictures, first studied Wing Chun Kung Fu in Hong Kong under the tutelage of Yip Man. When he came to the United States, Lee developed a concept of martial arts for the individual man that he labeled Jeet Kune Do - the way of the intercepting fist. His first book, The Tao of Jeet Kune Do, became a standard in the martial arts field. It was followed by Bruce Lee s Fighting Method a series of four volumes complied by Lee s friend and student M. Uyehara. This DVD covers the first two volumes of Lee s fighting method Basic Training and Self-Defense Techniques. Topics include warm-ups, basic exercises, on-guard positions, footwork, power training, speed training and self-defense techniques. Demonstrating the techniques in this DVD presentation are Ted Wong and Richard Bustillo. Wong trained with Lee toward the later stages of Jeet Kune Do s development, becoming Lee s last major private student. He appeared with Lee in the photo techniques of the Bruce Lee s Fighting Method books and is considered to be Lee s protégé, being one of four to receive direct certification from Lee. After Lee s death, Wong chose not to teach Jeet Kune Do publicly, instead establishing a semiprivate, nonprofit school in San Francisco in 1990. Bustillo is the director and co-founder of the International Martial Arts and Boxing Academy in Carson, California. He has more than 30 years of experience in the martial arts, is a senior instructor of Lee s Jeet Kune Do concepts and as a member of the Black Belt Hall of Fame, is always in high demand on the international martial arts seminar circuit.

There is one thing that doesnt seem to change over the years and that is the proven methods of self defense. I bought this dvd to help maintain my flexible and improve my self defense techniques that were never super developed and certainly rusty. I find that it makes for a great motivator of exercising for flexibiliy and improving ones self defense techniques is always time well spent when you are in the mood.

Great reference for Bruce Lee's Fighting Method

by P. Bakhshpour from Maryland on 2009-09-23
I recently decided to learn some JKD basics and started by purchasing the new collective edition of Bruce Lee's Fighting Method: The Complete Edition. BLFM is Bruce's original teachings on JKD. This video is a very good adaptation of the basics covered in the book, and accompanies it very well. The part that I had a hard time with in the book is the southpaw stance (on-guard position) used in JKD. I really needed some visual guidance. JKD basic techniques (movements, lunges, kicking and punching) are covered well here and will help you better understand the information in the book. The only problem is the short length of the video (about 52 minutes) and its price.

Master the Art of Fighting in your own Living Room

by Jason T. Fetters from Tampa, FL The Sunshine State on 2009-03-12
Excellent companion video to the Bruce Lee Fighting Methods books that are now available in one handsome hardcover edition. Bruce Lee's Fighting Method: The Complete Edition Black Belt Magazine has done a fine job of showing how Lee's techniques and training ideas come to life from the pages. Its one thing to see and read through the text and try to figure out how its suppose to look. You really need to see it to get the complete picture. This is Bruce's real fighting art. There are no camera tricks, battle yells, or flying jump kicks. This is a nonsense realistic approach to combat and how to prepare for it. If your used to seeing Lee fight in one of his many Hong Kong fighting movies, you may be surprised at how he really viewed combat. Most of his kicks were below the waist, unless playing around in a light hearted sparring session, then higher head kicks would be used. Punches from his Wing Chun background as also put to good use. The most practical section has to be on how to bring it all together and use it for self defense. Most of the self defense moves from Bruce Lee's Fighting Method Self Defense Bruce Lee's Fighting Method, Vol. 1: Self-Defense Techniques are shown. How to execute them when dealing with a variety of different attacks. This instructional DVD is a must have for getting the complete picture that the books only present the first half of.

I'm sure it's great....

by T. Oare from Albany, OR USA on 2008-10-13
First off, It's my fault for taking so long to get to this DVD. College and other issues = lack of personal time. When I did pop it into the DVD player I found one large problem.Audio.It begins just fine for about 30 seconds (after selecting play in the title menu). After which it just repeats that first small audio segment while the video it self keeps on going. Unfortunately I cannot return it. But I can warn you to check it out as soon as it arrives at your home.Looks great though. Appears to have everything you would want, from the people you want showing you these techniques. I'll just have to spend $30 on another DVD.

Description

Martial arts legend David Carradine (TV s Kung Fu, Kill Bill) hosts and narrates this dynamic program where you will build muscle, increase flexibility and develop functional strength, all while increasing internal chi flow throughout the body. The movements of this program are very simple and easy to learn. However, if you follow the narration and apply dynamic tension, spirit and breathing, you will get a very thorough and intense workout. You can take it as far and deep as you want to. The Shaolin Temple of northern China is credited to be the birthplace of Chinese Martial Arts. A wide variety of Martial Art styles formulated from the temple including the Hung style. The Hung style is based upon the movements of the crane and the tiger. It is famous for building extraordinary strength and power. While Tai Chi develops chi (internal energy) through breathing, mind intent, postures and relaxed movement, Hung style develops chi through breathing, mind intent, stances and dynamic tension. The on-screen instructors, Donald Hamby and Mike Marshall, have both taught Kung Fu for over 25 years.

Great Foundation for Daily Routine

by Value Shopper from So. California on 2010-05-31
I recently began Aikido and was looking for a DVD that would provide a foundation for daily Warm-Up and exercise similar to that taught at my dojo. Structure, routine and the simulation of training with others through use of this DVD provides what is missing when away from the dojo. I use this every morning as a foundation for my own training and supplment with stretching and Warm-up as taught by Sensei and those unique to Aikido. This DVD is only 34 min. long and the routines provide more than the liner notes describe. The strength building segments address specific areas that are common to Kung Fu and Aikido and when you think about it, there was a terrible lack of Nautilus and Bowflex equipment when these arts were developed -once the routine is memorized, you can 'go anywhere' and build according to your own martial discipline.Production quality is high in all respects. David Carradine guides you through the program and the music selected in combination with his voice helps to remain focused, undistracted and with the clarity and presence of mind necessary in martial arts. If you prefer to follow along without the narrative, this option (music only) is available in addition to Chapter Selection.Hamby and Marshall are fine examples of focus, form and physical development.Thank you Mr. Carradine. You area and will be missed.

Surprisingly good workout

by Kung Fu Stu from Phoenix, AZ on 2010-02-18
As a martial artist and exercise enthusiast, I am always looking for new ideas to add to my workouts. I've been a fan of David's acting since I saw the original Kung Fu series as a kid, so I figured this might be a good dvd to add to my collection. In addition, Hung Gar kung fu is one of the styles I practice and I recognized Sifu Donald Hamby on the cover which further piqued my interest. I figured in the worse case, it would at least be something I would enjoy watching regardless of if I found the workout useful or not. To my surprise, this is actually a very effective and fun workout. Even if you are not a martial artist, this is still a great workout that will have you seeing and feeling results in no time.Basically, the workout consists of Kung Fu (mainly Hung Gar style) stances and movements done in an isometric fashion. For those not familiar with isometric training, you perform a series of exercises using only your own muscle contraction as resistance. You don't use any weights or bands with this workout. The level of intensity is up to you. Another advantage is that once you learn the routine, you can do it anywhere...in your hotel room while travelling, in your cubicle during a break, etc. This workout might also be useful for those with injuries or conditions that don't allow the use of heavy weights. Isometric training became a craze during the 60's and was one of the training methods used by Bruce Lee.The workout itself lasts about 25 minutes including the warmup. While it might not look like much of a workout, after doing it 3 times a week for a couple weeks, I can already see and feel a difference in my muscle definition (especially the arms and shoulders) and more importantly in functional strength. An added benefit is that it makes you feel great after doing a workout. Sort of like the endorphin rush you get after a good workout, but this seems like a different type of good feeling. It's hard to explain but give it a try and you'll see what I mean.Of course, not everyone will have the same benefit or experience from doing this workout, but than can be said of any other exercise dvd or routine. Still, in my opinion, this workout is great as a stand alone routine, or add some cardio or ab exercises to make it part of a complete full body program.Note: When you watch the dvd, be sure to go to the main menu and select "full mix" (or something similar) under audio options, otherwise you won't hear David's narration as you go along through the workout. For some reason it seems to default to the "music only" option, unless that's just some quirk with my dvd player.

The Shinobigatana (sword of the stealer-in) is a unique and powerful weapon. Unlike most swords, the Shinobigatana is designed to be utilitarian, stressing usefulness over ornamentation. Its blade ranges from 16 to 22 inches in length and is only roughly sharpened. It has a long handle for improve leverage and a large square handguard to better protect the Ninja's hands when clashing. Beyond its obvious cutting techniques, the Shinobigatana has many unorthodox abilities that further separate it from an ordinary sword. It has a very strong scabbard that can be used as a secordary weapon, a hidden compartment filled with blinding powder and a long length of cord that can be used to entangle the enemy or flail the scabbard.

This Production Exceeds Expectations

by Chikara Makkon from Queensland, Australia on 2006-07-23
This video REALLY impressed me.. I have been buying martial arts videos for years and am always disappointed by the quality of most "slapped up" productions. This video is definately the exception. Very clear, well lit, concise material and audio that can actually be heard.. hallelujah. The material covered is well rounded and informative.. Stances, grips and strikes are all covered in reasonable detail, allowing for months, if not years of study (actually more like practise material)If you are looking for the quick fix, bridge guide to swords, this is not the video for you. However if you are serious about learning and ready to put in the time to practise these forms diligently, then this is for you :) (more material covered in this video than 8 months at my local kenjutsu school)

Good Production, Basic Functional Demonstrations.

by Corey Reynolds from Cocoa, FL USA on 2004-03-01
This isn't the advanced video for the person wanting to clash with a practiced samurai. But it is a start. Not overly entertaining, sometimes vague, and a very basic level of instruction. But on the other hand, if you start with this one... I think one could watch and practice the stances and basic sword techniques shown for many weeks to months and be prepared for another step up the ladder of martial arts sword use. There should be a series here to advance but nothing so far available. There is a bonus in this video that I greatly appreciated: explained the design of the ninja's sword! Making one of these for practice is within most amature craftman's ability. Can you say "where's my local leaf-spring manufacturer?" They can supply you with the non-heat treated steel, and can treat it when you have shaped it and put the holes where you want them. I didn't expect this in the tape. I bought a Cold Steel Chisma Katana (24") and thought it best to learn to use it. But where on earth does one learn to use a sword in suburbia? Videos! I recommend this one to go with all the other videos needed to learn sword techniques. Be careful! Don't bring a sword to a gun fight and have fun.

Not bad but not fantastic

by Daniel Wroe from Eureka, CA United States on 2003-06-02
Just about the only thing I learned off of this video was the japanese words for stances. I mean I watched the video about 5 times and learned quickly the techniques on the video. Its not very advanced at all. For the price, I think its a waste of money, cut it in half and it would be a 5 star, but[$$$] for a VHS that one can master within a few days, come on.

Great Foundation and Production Value

by Curtis Trammell from Florida, United States on 2003-01-17
I got the video for Christmas and was so inspired that I went right out and built my own sword based on Mark Grove's specifications. I've had hours of enjoyment since, practicing the simple techniques therein. There's nothing really flashy or flowery about this video. What it contains is a small number of simple, rudimentary techniques and principles, that with dedication and practice, can build a strong foundation for further study. The production value of this video is the best I've seen in the martial arts genre...it truly raises the bar! Whether you're a seasoned martial artist looking to expand your base of knowledge, or a complete novice wanting to experience something unique and challenging, this video is well worth the money. Buy it!

Finally!!!

by N. Figueroa from California USA on 2002-11-23
Finally someone out there decided to put out something with some integrity! I have seen so many martial arts instructionals that quite simply arent worth squat. This video presents swordsmanship that is REAL. It somehow echoes a sense of ancient seriousness and purity that contrasts sharply to the self serving, commercialized, or simply bogus video that is out there. Production wise it is very entertaining with some amazing choreographed fights in the start and finish of the video that simply entertain and emphasize the skills of this school's top men. Most videos I have seen seem to avoid that. Clarity, editing and music just seem to elevate this video above the rest. If you are really a swordplay buff and want to graduate from running around a park hitting your friends with sticks or you are currently a trained martial artist who wants to see what Kenjutsu a la Ninja truly is...see this. It will provide you with a serious and well developed program for forming fundamental swordskills that can not be disputed by any legitimate Japanese swordplay authority.

Boring As Hell

Interesting, flawed, more complex than average

by epb from Chicago, IL USA on 2010-05-12
First a brief synopsis: After a particularly bloody war, a samurai and a priest decide that the only way to bring Japan peace is to eliminate any warlords that contest the established regime BEFORE they can start another war. The priest will monitor the warlords, and the samurai is tasked with creating a team to eliminate the selected targets. The samurai decides to gather 10 children, orphaned by the war and found in the countryside, and take them to a remote area to train them to be the ultimate assassins, all in secret. Ten years later, after a brutal "final exam," he selects five as ready to carry out his assignment. The priest's intelligence says there are 3 troublesome warlords that need to be eliminated, and the young assassins are taken into the outside world for the first time to complete the mission. While the film is a period martial arts film and there's plenty of action, it also tries to tell a deeper story about loyalty, purpose, honor, and family. The primary source of conflict isn't the battles; it's the samurai demanding the students suddenly become ruthless professional assassins when days before, they'd be a family. The story is primarily seen thru the eyes of the best student, but also the most conflicted - a girl named Azumi. The flaw to the film is that it tries to serve two masters: on the one hand, it's your standard wire-fu actioner with 5 kids able to take on literally hundreds of trained soldiers and win, then go on to face opponents with almost supernatural abilities. On the other, it wants to be a drama, a philosophical meditation on war and morality. Depending on how you feel about which path it follows, you'll find the film dragging relentlessly, or deep moments interrupted by over-the-top fight scenes.I tend to like both types, which is why I gave it 4 stars. I'd say most anyone interested in the genre would find it worth watching. Caveat: I rented this via Amazon Video on Demand, which means I saw it dubbed in English.

Just Say No.

by Masnor from Tulsa, OK USA on 2010-01-29
If you like Jackie Chan, Yun-Fat Chow, Jet Li, Tony Jaa(Ong-Bak), or even Stephen Chow THEN SAVE YOUR MONEY, not even a rental.Nonsense story line. IMHO, Parts of the plot don't conform to any martial arts philosophy, tradition, or military logic. That ruined the movie for me. But if that hadn't, then the rest of the movie would have still been a disappointment.I should have waited for more reviews. And, that's why I added this review.

Incredible movie

by ScottDel from US on 2009-10-22
This is such a great movie. It has best swordplay I've ever seen in a movie. It looks great and is also very realistic as far as movies go. This martial arts movie differs from most in that it has a great story of emotion and drama. It is easily one of the best martial arts movie I have ever seen and I wonder why it isn't more widely known. A spectacular, phenomenal movie. A cinematic masterpiece in the martial arts genre. Incredible, realistic and great sword fighting, again the best I have ever seen. Great movie.

SPEED TRAINING: THE VIDEO - Developing Maximum Speed in Martial Arts Training
SPEED TRAINING: THE VIDEO - Developing Maximum Speed in Martial Arts Training
Sale Price: $37.97

Description

Speed is the most important asset a fighter can have. You can be strong, tough and skilled, but if your strikes and blocks aren't fast enough in a fight, you can still lose. While some people are blessed with natural quickness, others have to work hard for just a little increase in speed.Based on his best-selling book Speed Training, this Paladin video production distills author Loren Christensen's 40 years of experience as a martial artist into a comprehensive training program that will not only increase your fighting speed but also enhance the appearance of quickness, keeping your opponent off-guard and making him think you're much faster than you actually are. He teaches you how to "cheat" speed by improving your timing and accuracy in both punching and kicking through a series of dirty tricks that will have your opponent wondering just what hit him. From there, he shows you drills, exercises and principles that will increase your natural fighting speed and help you develop not only instantaneous reflexes but also explosive quickness and power in all your strikes.
