Martial Arts Sparring Gear

Martial Arts or the art of war as it is literally translated is any codified and tradition based form of combat, and most popular forms that originate in Asia focus on the uses of the hands, feet, elbows, Knees and any part of the body that one might use to defend themselves against an opponent. The art of sparring in martial arts is centuries old. Ancient masters of different forms all found that it was insufficient to simply imagine ones opponent at all times when training; it eventually became necessary to utilize ones skills in practice against a real opponent. In order to prepare for combat one must practice simulated combat and all forms of martial arts even those that do not originate in Asia utilize sparring to accomplish this.

As one might imagine, however, practicing combat without hurting your opponent or being hurt yourself is difficult, and over time martial arts sparring gear has emerged to protect the vital parts of one's body and prevent injury. In modern times the most popular forms of martial arts are of Asian origins, and popular name brands such as macho and century have become known for providing quality protection for those individuals engaging in martial arts sparring.

All gear should come with a quality and satisfaction guarantee, because at the end of the day after being struck repeatedly by your opponent your protective gear isn't protecting you or holding up then you might have a problem. Head gear, face shields, mouth guards, hand guards, feet protection, shin guards, and chest protection are some of the absolutely necessary sparring gear any student or studio will need to have on hand in order to safely engage in sparring.

Martial arts sparring gear isn't just about protection, however, though that is its primary purpose. Effective gear will also allow for movement, and some gear may be either light or heavy to help teach you fighting under different weight restraints.

Being comfortable in your sparring gear is important, but being fully protected is of greater concern. Different forms of martial arts will choose to utilize varying degrees of sparring gear protection, and some choose not to utilize sparring gear at all. Those forms that choose not to use sparring gear within their centers do so under the careful and diligent eye of a trained master, but for students who wish to practice sparring outside of their center, protective sparring gear is always essential.

Encylopedia of martial arts.

by Big John from Midwest, USA on 2007-01-12
The cover says "A very informative and well-rounded explanation of fighting." This is not a training book. It is a detailed record of various styles. I bought this book in order to see if I could learn a new move or maybe a new training tip. This book seems to be a lot like an encylopedia of martial art styles. There is a short description of every martial art imaginable and some you have never heard of. If you are experienced and looking to learn some new techniques to use in the gym then this book is not for you. This would be good to read about the different rules of different martial arts. Maybe I should have read reviews on this book. I bought this book for the wrong purpose.

A very useful book

by Jeremy Henderson from Claymont, DE on 2006-07-12
I've never seen a book that covers more(or half as many) forms of sparring as Ultimate Sparring by Jonathan Maberry. It's front-loaded with a lot of great information on rules, first aid, history, etc., and then moves into a style-by-style guide of sparring methods that really does cover the topic. I'm impressed. Very impressed.

THE BEST BOOK OF ITS KIND

by Albert Consadine from Detroit on 2004-04-15
This is by far the best and most complete book on sparring methods I've ever seen, and I have quite a library of martial arts classics.

ABSOLUTELY TERRIFIC

by Alfred Maguire from Ft. Gordon, GA on 2004-04-01
What an amazing book! This is the kind of thing that needs to be in every military school and library, not to mention martial arts school, in the country. It's easy to read, packed with useful information, and has dynamic photos. Just great!

Marvelous Book!

by Shelton Redmond from Austin, TX on 2004-04-01
I've been reading martial arts books for many years and this is certainly one of the finest and most thoroughly researched works I've ever come across. Bravo!

Awesome DVD!!!

by T. Brown from on 2009-10-20
The tips and techniques in this DVD will take your sparring to a whole new level. It is a must for any martial artist's collection.

On my shortlist of favorites

by Nicholas Scopelliti from Gaithersburg, MD on 2009-10-12
I've been looking forward to a DVD on sparring for ages, and this is now on my list of favorites by Sammy Franco. If you've ever sparred with a more formidable opponent, you already know why, too. Unless you're a boxer, you don't spar for the sake of sparring. You spar in order to learn and benefit from the skills and attributes you can improve that will make you a better fighter. But like Mr. Franco says in the DVD, when you're a beginner or if you're sparring with someone more advanced than you, you go into "survival mode". You defend as much as possible, try to land a few hits every now and then, and hope for the best. You don't learn much, frankly. But it doesn't have to be that way. This DVD will teach you the skills you need in order to start learning and to ultimately dominate your sparring partners. You will feel more confident and wonder how it is you ever sparred without these techniques in your arsenal. Oh... and you will LOVE the "steamroller" and "cover & crush" techniques!

Instantly improveyour sparring success.

by G. Vartha from New Zealand on 2009-10-08
This DVD tuition should be in all fight training regimes. If you are a beginner, then you MUST have this no-nonsense DVD. I wish I had these approaches when I was starting out, as I would've hit the ring running. For intermediate trainees, this will fill any gaps in your sparring, and for the advanced fighter... there are techniques here that can be added to your growing skill base, without a doubt. There is never an end to learning, and I especially enjoyed the "Steam Roller", and will be using it from now on. I use a variation of the "Bait and Smash Technique" already, and it was good to see it presented to the masses for sparring! My sparring has now taken on a more varied and technical flow, and am already seeing the benefits in sparring... and a more cautious partner (and myself, as well). Thanks Sammy & CFA, for giving me more tools, with which to perfect my training goals.

If you've never sparred before

by from Knoxville, TN USA on 2000-10-29
I just bought this book, and I think it's a pretty good intro to get the feel of what goes on when sparring, and how to think, what to look for, etc. I recently started a karate class, and I was wondering how I should begin to think about sparring, because it was something completely new to me. This book talks about basic rules, basic strikes, and gives you a clue on what kind of counters work for certain openings. It's probably not very helpful for people who have been sparring a while, but it definitely made me more confident since I haven't done a whole lot of sparring and since I suck at it. But now I know what to look for and how to get better (beyond just practice, practice, practice) and so I think this book was valuable.

Perhaps One Of The Finest Books Ever Written On The Subject

by Shawn Kovacich from The Greatest Little City in the World on 2008-06-02
Having been involved in the martial art of Tae Kwon Do for over 25 years and currently holding a 4th dan black belt in the art, I am always more critical on books and DVD's on the subject of Tae Kwon Do more so than I am towards most any other martial art, with an occasional exception or two. Therefore, I was almost a little reluctant to read this book, but relented anyhow after skimming through the first few pages. Now normally I try and write a fairly complete and descriptive review on each unique section in a book, however, in this case I am going to forego my normal style and simply base my review on the overall quality of the entire book.If you are already a senior ranking student (gup) or black belt in Tae Kwon Do, then this book will not only be a welcome addition to your martial arts library, but the information provided within it is very valuable and relevant to the subject of "free sparring" in Tae Kwon Do. I can't imagine anyone not being able to learn a considerable amount about the subject even at just a first cursory look through this book.I found the material very well organized and easy to understand, if you already have a significant amount of experience in Tae Kwon Do. If you are a novice or beginner student, then I would recommend that you hold off on getting this book until you within a year or so of testing for black belt. This book recommends that you primarily use the following three kicks in competition.Roundhouse Kick Back Kick Axe KickI should make note that its not that other kicks aren't used, it's just that these kicks tend to be more effective in the competition arena. This book covers just about every possible subject that could or would come up on the subject of Tae Kwon Do "free sparring," although not all subjects are covered in great detail, they are discussed to varying degrees and offers the reader a pretty good overall view of the subject. I highly recommend this book to all individuals interested in Tae Kwon Do "free sparring."Shawn Kovacich Martial Artist/Author of the Achieving Kicking Excellence series.

Instructing Book for TKD Players

by from on 2005-05-15
I am a Japanese student. In Japan, there are few Japanese books of WTF taekwondo, so people uses English TKD books to learn taekwondo. And this book is one of the most popular TKD books in Japan. This fact would represent value of the book. As for me, this book is felt to be very useful, too. It helped me constructing training menus and sparring strategies. It contains lots of helpful instructions.

Good for the serious competitor

by Joseph M Burtner from Kennesaw, Georgia on 2003-12-21
I've never been a fan of point sparring, but I have to admit this is a pretty good book. It's definetly not for the beginner, though. The technique section is very basic, giving only the briefest of discriptions on the kicks, but also providing suggestions on how the moves are best utilized. The book then goes into stratagies for TKD style sparring, though most of the drills and principles can be used by karateka as well. What does show a lot of depth is that the authors include chapters on sports medicine, nutrition, mental preparation, and conditioning. A lot of that information is useful to any serious martial artist who participates in point sparring, and I'd recoment the conditioning excersises be applied to any program. The book ends with a chapter on Olympic TKD rules, including weight classes and a list of fouls. A glossary follows. As this book was designed to prepare competitors and coaches for Olympic-level competition, I'd call it an essential publication to anyone who is competing at the national levels in any martial art point sparring.

A lot more than it looks

by K. Kvael from Norway on 2003-10-19
I think this is a great book. If you ar looking for a big book with a lot of pictures in it, then this is not the book for you since wery few of the combinations are shown. But if you already know how to kick and how to punch, then that should not be a problem for you. Everyone involved in sparring as a practicioner or as a coach could learn a lot from this book. I certainly did, even thaug i practice ITF Taekwon-Do, since a lot of the bodywork and qualities you need are similar.

Didnt like it

by Edwin Vehmaaanperä from Klaukkala, Uusimaa Finland on 2003-01-07
I didnt like this book and it was very boring. Its said the same things many times and the only thing I found useful were the moves that it showed. If this is the best book of TKD sparring I wonder what kind of books the others are.

Nice quality head gear for very good price

by T. Klotzbach from usa on 2010-02-10
This is a very nice quality product. It was alot cheaper than other similiar gear but when it arrived it was much nicer than I would expect. Can't comment on its use for spar'ing as my dad wears it to protect his head in case he falls as he is handicapped. But it deos seem to be very solid and thick and most likely would protect quite well during a spar'ing match.
