Finding The Perfect Pocket Knife

It has amazed me to learn how many different types of knives there are out there. When one first starts looking for a knife it seems a simple task but the more one looks the more one finds. Not only are there a variety of styles of knives but several different types and now even color choices. One would think it very simple to find that perfect knife and it is but you just have to take the time to look.

The first step to finding the perfect knife is to know exactly what the knife will be used for. Ones needs to know the purpose for the knife whether it be a hunting knife, a pocket knife, a survival knife or even a kitchen knife.

By definition the knife is an instrument having a sharp blade with a handle. Knives are known as weapons, tools, or utensils. Now we know the uses for the knife are wide spread. Knives are used in the kitchen for cutting and preparing food. Knives are used in hunting for the dressing of a kill. Knifes are used for defense, for survival and much, much more. Now days the average camper has a knife they will not leave home with out. Divers have that special knife tucked away for that unlikely event. Even workmen pull out that special knife that has the added tools for the job.

One has to determine exactly what the knife will be used for and then begin their selection from there. Once one has narrowed down what type of knife based on the intended usage, one can browse through the large selection of styles and special features. If there is a particular brand name ones likes, one can narrow the search down even more by selecting knifes by type and brand. The next step in the selection of the perfect knife is looking at what is offered. Now is the time to browse and compare different knives.

Be it the fisherman, the hunter, the diver, the outdoorsman, or the chef, the perfect knife makes all the difference. The wrong knife means another knife sitting in a drawer unused. Find the perfect pocket knife, hunting knife, survival knife, butterfly knife or Leatherman tool by knowing what you are looking for. Don't assume that there is one knife for all tasks.

JUNK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

by MEMPHIS from on 2010-08-27
THIS KNIFE IS A PIECE OF JUNK! WHEN I GOT MY ORDER THE KNIFE WAS SCRATCHED UP AND THE HOLDER SEAMS WERE RIPED.

it wa 17 bucks......

by R. Garland from CA, US on 2010-08-23
I haven't used this knife much, but the build quality seems solid. The compass doesnt work, the rubberized handle is kinda nice. as far as "Razer Sharp" not even close, i wouldn't quite call it dull, and I havent tried sharpening it yet as the included whet stone is also garbage.

Great messing around knife

by smokersdude from on 2010-07-24
It's a fun knife for $[...] bucks. If you're wanting a hand made top of the line knife, then you will not like it. Let me know if you find one of those for under $20. If you want a big sharp knife good for getting dirty then you will like it. You never know when you'll need a giant survival knife to fend off zombies. I was thinking it would be perfect for that.

Awesome Knife

by Mathias from on 2010-07-13
This survival knife is pretty neat. I had to sharpen it when I first got it. The compass has since broken, but evertyhing else is great. Nice to have a little waterproof compartment on it.

As dull as it gets, complete dissapointment

by Thor the Lightning God from new york, NY on 2010-07-11
This knife may be impressive looking and big, but "razor-sharp"??? If razors were this sharp, there would certainly be less suicides, (sorry for the awkward humor) this knife is duller than the average pair of scissors. I compared this to my kitchen and pocket knives, some of which I had considered dull, and this thing was the dullest of the lot. The edge wont cut cardboard!I attempted sharpening it, but the blade is so thick and tapers off to an edge so suddenly that without removing much of this metal there is no way to sharpen it. I just scratched off much of the black paint while attempting to sharpen, ruining the only good part about the knife, its appearance.Complete dissapointment

bush knife

by survivordude from on 2010-09-01
Dont buy this for the fire striker. buy it because its cheap as hell and you wont care if you lose it or break it or whatever else you can think of. i use this knife when i dont want to use a nice knife. first thing you should do if you buy this is remove the crappy string they have wrapped around it and replace it with 550 i got about 12' on mine. ditch the crap nylon sheath i made from from hardened leather. This blade holds a decent edge but it's made in china so dont rely on it to much. the plasic handle of the fire striker broke in one trip into the woods the magnesium bar its self works good enough but if you try and strike it while only holding the handle it will fall out.

Great Knife For This Price

by S. Sanchez from Miami, FL on 2010-08-13
I just got this knife in the mail, and am more than happy with my purchase. Mine did come with a decent edge on it. A far cry from razor sharp, but it can put a clean cut through the padded envelope it was shipped in. It's got a decent point on it too, and overall feels very solid. The cord handle that's included may not be the best, but it is sufficient and can be replaced. The fire starter works, and I appreciate the notches along the spine of the blade that work with it. The sheath doesn't inspire much confidence, but works well enough. And the finish looks a lot better in person than in the picture.Overall, if you were to drop me in the woods, I'd rather have my Ka-Bar any day of the week. But if you gave me this instead, I certainly wouldn't complain. Considering the price, this is a great knife for an emergency/survival kit. Or if you're just on a budget. Qswords was great with shipping too.

as cheap knives go...worth it.

by jovial from on 2010-08-08
Came in the mail on time and packaged well. It's a pretty good little knife. The steel is just Chinese stainless and pretty dull out of the box. The nylon wrapping had to go. I found a couple of vids on YouTube on how to wrap a handle with 550 cord and went that route. Took me awhile but I finally got an edge on it. The case is fairly crappy but I've seen worse. Have a feeling that it wouldn't take much for the knife point to go through the case all together. But hey for a $5 knife, it's perfect as an addition to your "go" bag or to stick in you vehicle!

Bought a fire-steel...

by Robert Mcguire from on 2010-07-27
I bought a fire-steel and they threw in a knife and crappy sheath for nothin, that was nice of them. Actually I use the knife and steel as a fire starter set, use the Tanto end on the steel and nice hot sparks that sizzle nicely. I've made several fires with just the stuff you find in the woods to make fire. First thing you'll want to do when it arrives is grab your favorite shovel, go into the back yard and dig a 2 foot deep hole, remove the string from the knife and throw the string and sheath into the hole, fill hole with concrete. The knife lends it's self nicely to retro-fitting a wood or para-cord wrap handle, sheaths can be found online or at the local gun show or make one. I wrapped mine in para-cord (another reviewer gave youtube as a source to learn some cool wraps-thanks)The knife, when sharpened will prepare everything you need to start fires then use it to strike the steel to your tinder and voila, fire! The knife has a thumb grip in front of the tang that makes the difference in a knife this small. It is actually well balanced enough to successfully throw and stick. Consider buying this as part of a fire starter kit that comes with a rust proof knife/striker blank that you'll have to work on, a good chance for you to personalize something in your kit, after a Saturday morning on this bad boy I now have something that will always be with me when I'm away from civilization.

good knife for a 10 year old

by steve from on 2010-09-01
sometimes cheap things are really expensive... what i mean is, lighting a cigarette with a $5 note is very expensive.. why would you do that?? get a $50.00 gold plated lighter and you can light packet after packet.the saw is a piece of rough wire.the fishing line would be rated for 1lb at the most and the hooks are very light as well...the compass is inaccurate and the handle is brittle.the sharpening stone is so small its a joke, and as for the "leather" pouch, well mine is vinyl but still probably the most expensive part of the item.do i recommend it... of course, for your 10 yr old son to run around the backyard pretending to be rambo, hours of entertainment, he will think your the best, and the thing is such a piece of crap he wont be able to hurt anything with it..

Paid $8.19 for this, better than I expected for that price

by K. Corn from Indianapolis,, IN United States on 2010-07-20
When I bought this, I knew I was taking a chance but I was pleasantly surprised. To be fair, my expectations were fairly low. Here's my pros and cons.PROS:I do believe that having this knife could help save someone's life. Would you need other items? Of course, but if the weather was not too cold and it didn't rain and you had a decent jacket with you, it would be totally possible to survive a few days with this. You have the basic supplies for fishing (hook, line) and even if you didn't have water nearby with plenty of fish, you aren't going to starve for a few days. We did scale a fish with the serrated blade and it did a fine job. So if you can catch fish, you can also scale them. The knife comes with a sharpening tool and you WILL need to use this. The point of the knife is definitely sharp enough to be used for defense, especially if an attacker didn't expect it. The saw works well enough (we tested it outside. So does the compass. The heft or weight of this knife was decent, too. For $8.19, it compact and useful. The carrying case is both convenient and comes with an attached rope if you needed to hang it from your belt or perhaps somewhere in a tent or elsewhere Now the downsides.....CONS:The photo on the package shows matches and so does the product photo. To be fair, the product description notes Amazon clearly says that matches are NOT included. However, having both the package and item photo which includes matches is misleading. The package itself even noted that matches were included. They were not. So they are NOT included but easy enough to add.The handle of this is plastic. I don't know how well that would hold up with heavy use. But for $8.19, I'd use this as a supplement to other tools. Like I wrote before, I didn't expect much and this was heavier and the blade far more solid than I anticipated. The blade needs to be sharpened after each use.

worth the price

Gerber Prodigy

by Hank from on 2010-08-20
The thing I like about this knife is that it can be used for multiple things: cutting, chopping, sawing, hammering, and as a window punch. I think the size is perfect(a little smaller than the LMF2). The sheath is okay. Its starting to split a little around the top edge. It only comes with one leg strap(if that matters to you) but I use my belt for the top and the one leg strap for the bottom anyways. I wish it had a spot on the back of the blade that could be used as a striker for a fire starter. Its durable, the handle is comfortable, its easy to sharpen, and I like the weight of it. If you're looking for something that is bigger, heavier, and that comes with a great sheath(Integrated sharpener, two leg staps, and a saftey knife), then go with the Gerber LMF2 for about $25-$35 more. Hope you found this helpful.

Man vs Wild Knife

by koiphish from on 2010-08-12
Bear Grylls from 'Man vs Wild' was using this knife in his Season 5 "Papua New Guinea" Episode and I believe I made it out in the trailer for the upcoming "Northern Territory, Australia" episode as well. If it is tough enough for his use, it can't be too bad a knife now can it? He was beating it to death cutting open a coconut for milk and food, cutting a hole in a banana tree for water and using a rock to hammer the knife through bamboo trees for bedding and a raft. I might give it a go up in the mountains to see how it holds up.

Great Alternative to the LMII

by Tyler from on 2010-08-10
The Prodigy is a strong, capable knife. Not only does it have the versatility of a partial serration, but it also has the strength of a full teng to back it up. I hike and backpack a good bit, and this knife has proven invaluable while on the trail. My friend has the larger LM II, but I prefer the more manageable Prodigy. Overall, the knife is a great value, and seems like it will outlast my need for it.

High quality, versatile, great feel

by DiCom1 from on 2010-07-26
The Gerber name has alway meant high quality when it comes to blades. The Prodigy definitely lives up to that reputation. I bought this knife to go on my MOLLE 2 vest, mounted upside down. The versatile sheath, MOLLE attach straps and firm sheath backing make this a perfect knife for my needs.

Good Value

by Steven D. Larson from Kennesaw, GA on 2010-06-24
Good solid knife for the price. Cut off the 2nd lower strap (handle)on the sheath, interfered with placing it back in. Weight and balance excellent.

Survival Knife?!?

by Chairforce from on 2010-08-26
Bought this knife intending to take it along when I went camping. As with most knives you will need to sharpen this blade, the edge does stay on nicely though.Only major issue is the serration on the back side of the blade. You have to put this knife into the sheath in a the correct orientation or you will rip the nylon up when you pull the knife out.The striker seems to be a decent quality, have not had a problem getting a spark.Over all, a good knife for the price.

OK for the price

by G. Gillas from on 2010-07-07
I re-wrapped the handle on mine and found the blade extremely dull as well. The case is not stiff at all which leads to the knife getting caught while inserting and removing from case. Also, the nylon on the case was very slightly frayed in places when it arrived which I simply repaired with a lighter. Still, this knife is inexpensive and lighter than other knives it's size.

Another inexpensive but good knife, great back up

by buffalo1a from OR, USA on 2010-02-01
Good little full tang knife , duller than dull you will spend sometime sharpening it, but is a decent knife for price. You will want to rewrap the handle with your own para cord.

Not after that coon tried to make sweet coon love to my poor beagle... no sir... no more coon slingin' for me. Poor betsy still won't come out of her hut. She just keeps on howlin' with her sad droopy eyes and sits with her bee hind facin' the corner. Mmmm hm... It's a sad sight, fer sure.Oh yeah, I almost fergot, nice knife. Just don't shoot nuthin' bigger than a beaver, unless you plan on stunnin' it and then jumping on it to finish it off with the knife. Mmmmm hm...

Weak, cheap, not worth your $$

This knife is VERY cheaply constructed - I got one while I was still naive about knives, and I learned my lesson. Knife broke first time out! Blade doesn't hold an edge well either. All around piece of junk!

WoW!, I thought look at all this stuff I thought as I saw this knife at the flea market, wah, wah, waaaahh. That was when I got home and took the knife out to really use while not horrible I found the items very cheap and the knife itself lacking,......That being said not bad to give to a Boy Scout again when heavy use is not expected.

Not pictured correctly

by A. Hernandez from on 2010-06-08
nice knife, but not like on in picture. mine that was shipped had a circular black bunt, and a thin black guard between the blade and handle. The blade is connected to the bunt of the knife by a rod that goes through the handle, and when I tightened it because the blade was loose, the bunt of the blade kept twisting, like i had messed up the screw mechanism in the handle. i guess you get what you pay for, it's just not worth the return shipping to send it back.

Very nice

by Jovi Poursamadi from Austin, TX USA on 2010-03-27
I received this item very promptly, exactly on the day they said it would be here. Upon opening it, i found the knife to be in very good shape, decently sharp (although i still needed to sharpen it, and once i did, held an edge very well). The knife is heavy, and has a very sturdy feel to it. The smell is also slightly bothersome, but i assume it will fade through time and use. hope this helps!

Great Quality Knife!

by Matt from on 2010-08-30
It took a while for this product to get to me but it was worth it. This knife was Razor sharp right out of the box! The LED light is actualy realy bright and the safety whistle is verry loud! I havent tested the magnesium fire starter yet, but it was made by light my fire so if you have ever used this type of fire starter then you know how well it works. It has verry easy opening (not assisted)and features a spyderco style hole in the blade instead of a thumb stud for one handed opening. This knife is so compact that I rarely use the pocket clip. I realy enjoy carying this knife as a tool, it holds an edge well and is sturdy. Its another great product by Tool Logic.

Great Knife

Great product! Received it promptly...I'm very satisfied. Flashlight isn't the brightest, but for what it is, it's great.

Good idea but awkward grip and poor fit and finish.

by SteveG from on 2010-08-11
The single sided primary grind (chisel grind) blade is sharp and easy to open and of convenient size, the light works well for such a small unit, and the fire starter throws an impressive shower of hot sparks with a tool steel striker I provided. There is quite a bit less spark using the striker part of the stainless blade, but enough to start a fire. This tool provides a good bit of functionality in this small package. The down side is the very poor fit and finish and a problematic liner lock, which must be checked to ensure it engages. Mine would not lock without encouragement until I filed away some rough edges. A simple fix, but that is was required indicates poor quality control. The light/firestarter is held in by an o-ring that tends to bind and roll when being re-inserted. Holding the knife feels awkward due to the hump for the light/firestarter holder, but that does not impair it's function. This holder is removable with one wide slot screw if it bothers you.Overall a very good idea with only mediocre execution, but good enough that I carry it as a second knife when camping due to the extra functionality.

Decent Buy for the Money

While it may not be a Kershaw or Spyderco, it gets the job done. This is primarily my on-person knife while out and about in the wilderness. The blade is a bit softer than many of my other knives, but the LED (novelty) and the fire steel (lifesaving) make it my carry tool. The blade is extremely sharp and has kept a working edge. The serration has proved to be a nice addition, although I would like more of a 70/30 serrated mix, but thats just the details. For the price and function, I see no better option in a single package.

Burn baby burn

by S.B.W.B.S. from on 2010-07-14
This knife is a MUST BUY. It came razor sharp (shaved off some of my beard with it). The signal whistle on it is pretty loud and high pitched, definately gets peoples' attention. The led light that is on it is really bright for being so small. It helps to walk around at night. the knife is very sturdy when locked in place while open which is always a good thing. The fire starter is a little more complicated than i had expected because i had never used anything like it before. I found what works best is if you have some fire starter (a cotton ball that you swabbed in petroleum jelly and placed on some leaves, twigs, and sticks works fantastic for this) and lightly scrape some of the magnesium off onto the cotton ball. Then do one hard strike and it will catch the cotton ball on fire which will burn 5 to ten minutes to start up your bonfire. Using this method saves alot of money on lighter fluid. Get this here and get it now!

Solid knife

by J.Twain from on 2010-08-27
I think this is a great knife for anyone because of its low price and a great design. This knife is exactly like the new famous ka-bar from the outside. It feels and looks pretty much the same.It isn't anything near sharp at all and it is kinda dirty, but if you have a nice stone and a correct sharpening techique, this knife can be honed down to the edge of a razor. I will pay 20 for this one and consider it a great price, since the real one costs 70.I do have one usmc ka-bar to compare this knife to, and I have a huge collection of knives in all ranges, although I really don't need this knife at all but it sits nice in one of my favorite in my collection, and so I know what is it like for a real knife, and this is one of them.I highly recommend this knife to anyone that needs a good working and looking knife to last a life time but for an affortable price.Ps. I am not paid to write this review, but I really want you to pay for this knife. It has such a great price value.

Great Knife

This one, unlike the black tanto blade it's packaged with by amazon, looks exactly like it does in the picture. It's a good solid build, and very sturdy. Blade just needs a bit of tweaking to get it as sharp as I like it, but overall not bad. the rubber handle seems to be the only difference between this knife and other similar $100 KABAR knives.

love it
