Tae Kwon Do Training

Tae Kwon Do

Martial Arts were originally created for self defense and to protect life. Today, people from all walks of life come to train, each having their own personal reasons for wanting to learn Tae Kwon Do.

The Tae Kwon Do is one kind of martial arts. It came from Korea and in 1966, the first international organization - International Tae Kwon Do Alliance was set up. In 1988, the Tae Kwon Do became one of events in the Olympic Games.

The Tae Kwon Do does not use any weapon. It is a kind of unarmed wrestle with the rival. The Tae Kwon Do is for the justifiable defense. The modern Tae Kwon Do is classified into two kinds – ITF and WTF. Nowadays, we are usually taught WTF in society. WTF often appears in performances and practices. ITF is the original Tae Kwon Do and it is more useful in fights.

The spirit of Tae Kwon Do is proprieties, sense of honor and endurance. We learn the Tae Kwon Do not to suppress the others but to change ourselves into civil and military people. One of features of the Tae Kwon Do is the spirit “begin with the proprieties and over also with it”. We always salute with each other when we begin to practice or have any touch. In practice, being injured is a common phenomenon. But we have to conquer it and go on practicing because we can’t achieve the highly standard without endurance and courage.

The Tae Kwon Do is a favorable sport to many people and it brings self-strength, self-knowledge, self-confidence, and self-control. You don't have to be an Olympic athlete to enjoy the many benefits of Taekwondo. It trains both body and mind. It is a sport for everyone - men, women, and children.

I have a black belt in Okinawan Karate how long would it take to get one in tae kwon do?

I practiced Okinawan Karate for 10 years until a develop a mild carpal tunnel syndrome and tendonitis, thank God my legs are still fine. Since Okinawan Karate spend 70% of training doing punches which worsen my hand I am hoping to make a transition to tae kwon do which is 70% of training are kicking. Be objective any tae kwon do black belts, I need your advice. Peace-out

I don't see that you are implying that your conditions came from your Okinawan training.

I can tell you if you think that switching to TKD is not going to help you.

You need nutritional counseling for both conditions.

I teach Okinawan arts and feel compelled to ask, what style and from who?

If you have carpal tunnel from practice, it's because your instructor is probably one of those that has you doing knuckle push-ups until your knuckles bleed. As much as there are many who love to say that this type of training is the best - it isn't.

That super hardcore training is what leads to unnecessary injuries.

You should train correctly but you can't abuse your body. You must use herbs internally and externally and proper nutrition to promote healing. You must also rest.

Description

Obscure documents, Korean-language books, and in-depth interviews with tae kwon do pioneers tell the tale of the origin of the most popular martial art. In 1938, tae kwon do began at the end of a poker game in a tiny village in a remote corner of what is now North Korea by Choi Hong-Hi, who began the martial art, and his nemesis, Kim Un-Yong, who developed the Olympic style and became one of the most powerful, controversial men in sports. The story follows Choi from the 1938 poker game where he fought for his life, through high-class geisha houses where the art was named, and into the Vietnam War where the martial art evolved into a killing art. The techniques cut across all realms—from the late 1960s when tae kwon do-trained Korean CIA agents kidnapped people in the U.S. and Europe, to the 1970s when Bruce Lee, Chuck Norris, and other Hollywood stars master the art’s new kicks. Tae kwon do is also a martial art for the 21st century, one of merciless techniques, indomitable men, and justice pumped on steroids.

This book expalins a lot

by tlouis from Naples, FL United States on 2010-08-18
If you have ever studied TKD, the material presented in this book will provide a solid background to what you have probably encountered in the dojang. The author points out how Tae Kwon Do is also been called Take My Dough. Korean instuctors I have encountered are interested in only one thing - money. They are unscrupulous ( by our standards) and basically uninterested in their students except as cash cows. This book reveals a history that puts this into perspective. The book explains how TKD evolved from a really rough, combat art in the 50's and 60's to the "foot tag"" we see pre schoolers playing around dojangs all over America. (Instructors will tell you if they taught the " old fashioned way" they wouldn't have any students; sort of proving the above points). The growth of TKD is a good testament to the adage that money ruins everything. There is no better example than Korean TKD. So, if you history with TKD I think you will find this book interesting, although it does get a bit tedious at times, with too many names and dates.

book review - A Killing Art

by jennyt from on 2010-08-17
I have almost finished reading this book and it has been very revealing and, if I am correct, the only book that has spoken about the history of Tae Kwon Do in relation to the Korean grandmasters. Whilst it is honest, it is also well written and diplomatic. Its existence is welcomed as we are often asked questions that we have been unable to answer. It is also quite sad to see the struggles. NOT FOR THE FAINT AT HEART

by Douglas Cook from Warwick, NY USA on 2009-11-25
This book is not for the faint at heart, nor is it for those new to the martial arts. If you harbor any preconceived notions regarding the virtues of taekwondo, this work will quickly relieve you of them. However, this story must be told and Mr. Gillis does it well. His research is deep and heavily annotated. I have read this book several times with great enthusiasm since it contains many valuable details and reads like a novel. Yet, being personally familiar with several of the protaganists portrayed, I feel a more balanced treatment would have resulted in an even more accurate work. This is the only reason I rated the book four stars rather than five. I have written three books focusing on traditional taekwondo and, regardless of information within this book, continue to feel that there are those both locally and in Korea, the homeland of taekwondo, who support the true heart of traditional taekwondo. So...read with care and maintain an open mind.

What you didnt know ,but need to know the tragic discrediting of ITF by the KCIA for profit and gain for the WTF, the deception, lies , extortion kidnaping of foreign instructors and their families .

Excellent Introductory to Intermediate Mixed Martial Arts Book

by C. H. Jones from Raleigh, NC on 2010-08-22
This is one of the shorter, most down to earth, and practical overviews of MMA fighting styles that I have run across. The authors did a very good job of writing and structuring the book's contents, giving newcomers --and more advanced practitioners-- an introduction to the history, culture, goals, classic techniques, and modern variations. One thing I particularly enjoyed was that the authors allocated a fair amount of the discussion to Judo. It seems to me that Judo is often overlooked as a functional set of techniques that can serve any MMA athlete quite well. For example, fighters such as Mikey Dimic (one of the authors) and Karo Parisyan have fared very well using judo on the mats and in the octagon, with Mickey winning two world titles in Sport Jujitsu, and Karo holding the UFC welter-weight title belt for a period of time.

The Best Single-Volume MMA Book

by Plotinus from on 2009-03-16
Superb book written by a great team including MMA coach Mickey Dimic, UFC Champion Carlos Newton, BJJ whiz Mark Bocek and Britain's kickboxing/MMA star Gary Turner. This book is unique in that it actually explains WHY and HOW everything works. Excellent theory and practice book! Adds a lot of depth to your MMA! A big help in training! When I ordered this book, I didn't know what I was going to get, but it looked good: written by a combination of UFC champions, amateur MMA champions and grappling and striking specialists in pro MMA, some in UFC others in other leagues. However, besides Carlos Newton, I wasn't too familiar with who the others were, but this is probably more due to my interest in MMA being more in participating than in keeping stats on all the fighters. But, WOW, the book does impress! It takes the mystery and confusion out of the sport by starting with the building block techniques like strikes, takedowns, pins, guard work and subs, and then shows how you link them together, and then how to strategize and train to maximize your chances against an opponent. What I really like is how, unlike it seems every other book out there, they prioritize moves, showing which ones are most common and effective, and not just throwing out an unorganized mess of moves that the player has to experiment with to see what he finds better than what. One other thing I really like is that the book is written for amateur players too. There are more restrictions on amateur events, and this book helps you to navigate through them. The drills in the book are very useful and even fun, and opened my eyes to more efficient ways of training. Many of them are situational based, and the book describes the most "go for" moves from each, for both attacker and defender, and how to do them. The book even discusses about how to transition from a base art, like wrestling, BJJ or Muay Thai, to MMA and what your major holes are that you have to fill when making that transition. This book actually explains everything and doesn't just throw a bunch of moves at you to figure out. Excellent book.

An outstanding Strategy, Skills, and Drills guide!

by Canadian Judoka from on 2008-11-13
This is a terrific book with a unique approach to MMA strategy and training. It combines historical methods proven successful for warriors of the past with modern training techniques to create an outline for MMA success for the present day warrior.I've found a lot of great training tips and advice in this book for all phases of the game (standing striking, clinch, and ground), and think the fundamentals and fighting strategies are spot-on.If you want to excel in MMA, I think this is an important book to read!

This book is confusing

by from on 1998-09-07
This book is basically lists of things rather than text which makes it hard to learn from. The forms drawings are small and hard to follow (and some of the names are spelled wrong). There are a lot of better books out there that cover each of the subjects in this book in more detail.

Doesn't show alot

by mkorn227@aol.com from Duncannon, PA, USA on 1998-08-23
This book shows pal-gwe forms 1-8, tae-kook forms 1-8, koryo, kumgang, and tae book. If you are looking for a book on the technique of kicks, punches, etc., then don't by this book(it shows some but doesn't have much pictures for them). The pictures of the forms are sort of detailed but very small compared to the ones in "Tae kwon do: the ultimate reference guide to the world's most popular martial art." Another thing is: the stances and hand/kicking techniques are explained in korean. This may help u study korean terms better but it is sort of a waste of time. For a book thats $10.36, i'd say its not bad for the price.

Great reference for TKD Forms!

by from on 1997-08-12
This book is useful to the student of TKD if only for the detailed drawings and descriptions of the taegeuk, palgwe, koryo, etc. poomse. Also contains some history, Korean-English vocabulary, and descriptions of basic TKD techniques
