Description

This book binds the timeless observations and invaluable advice of master bladesmith and blade combat expert Bill Bagwell under one cover for the first time. As the outspoken author of Soldier of Fortune's "Battle Blades" column from 1984 to 1988, Bagwell was considered both outrageous and revolutionary in his advocacy of carrying fighting knives as long as 10 inches and his firm belief that the Bowie knife was the most effective and efficient fighting knife ever developed. His assignment as a contributing editor to SOF was to test and evaluate contemporary knives from all over the world, and he soon earned a reputation for cutting to the chase. Candid and frank almost to a fault, he told it like it was - and he could always back it up. Sixteen years after his first column made its debut, Bagwell's convictions on knife design and blade technique have gained validity in the industry, and he has earned the respect of even some of his most vocal critics. This book provides an unprecedented opportunity to study the design and use of Bowies and other big knives and learn which blade designs and combat techniques stand up to both the rigors of battle and the test of time.

Classic

A classic by a master blade smith and acknowledged king of Bowie knife makers. For anyone interested in the Bowie and large fighting knives in general, it is a valuable read.

Interesting but blow-hard flawed

by A reader from USA on 2007-06-17
It is an interesting book. Bagwell's repeated condemnation of knives less than 9 inches long wears pretty thin though. And on this point he doesn't know what he's talking about - there are situations (fighting a large animal,eg,) where a blade longer than 7 inches will rapidly become a liability. Also his pronouncements on the absence of effective short blade fighting tradition in Japan is just wrong. And would anyone really choose that U-shaped Chilean military knife over a Kbar in combat???

A Closer Look at the Bowie Knife ~ The Deadliest Knife on Earth. And... much more...

by Michael Chesbro from Rainier, Washington USA on 2006-10-22
Bill Bagwell was the author of the `Battle Blades" column in `Soldier of Fortune' magazine from 1983 to 1987. During that time he wrote many articles about a wide variety of knife related topics. In his book "Bowies, Big Knives and The Best of Battle Blades" Mr. Bagwell reprints many of these articles.Mr. Bagwell begins his book with a closer look at the Bowie knife, which he advocates as the deadliest knife on earth. He advocates carrying a knife of at least 9.25 inches, and in Bowies, Big Knives and The Best of Battle Blades he explains how to effectively carry a large knife in modern society without drawing unwanted attention. (I can personally attest to the effectiveness of Mr. Bagwell's instructions on the use and carry of the Bowie knife, as I have done so for years using the method he suggests.)Because much of the book is reprints of `Battle Blades' articles we also are treated to Mr. Bagwell's opinion on a number of other knives, such as the K-Bar, saw-toothed blades, daggers, the Kukri, the Japanese tanto knife, throwing stars (shuriken), and the AK bayonet. Mr. Bagwell's opinions on these knives can be controversial, but his opinions are well reasoned in each case ~ whether one agrees with him or not. While "Bowies, Big Knives and The Best of Battle Blades" gives much insight into the idea and concept of knife fighting, it isn't a manual intended to teach knife fighting techniques. For that Mr. Bagwell recommends the training material produced by James Keating at Comtech, here in Washington State (again a recommendation I can personally attest to having much merit). If there is any criticism about "Bowies, Big Knives and The Best of Battle Blades" it's that because many of the book's chapters are reprints of the `Battle Blade' articles they are limited in length imposed by a magazine (Soldier of Fortune). Still this is only a very a minor criticism, as the quality of the book as a whole is excellent. For anyone interested in carrying large knives (especially Bowie knives), "Bowies, Big Knives and The Best of Battle Blades" is worth adding to your personal library.

The author dwells too much on knife fighting rather than the knives. I found the book to be a disappointment.

The other reviews are right on

by Andrew D. Cantrill from Palm Springs, CA United States on 2004-01-03
The other positive reviews pretty well sum up my thoughts on this text. A must for people who carry a knife with the idea that they may have to use it someday to save their skin. I also recommend Cold Steel by Steyers and Everybody's Knife Bible by Paul. Put together, you will not need any other texts on blade usage.

The innovative AccuSharp Knife Sharpener lets you sharpen most blades in around ten seconds. This sharpener's easy-to-use design makes it a great tool to have on hand in professional and personal kitchens, as well as an easy choice for hunters, fishermen and women, gardeners, and craftspeople. Featuring a unique, ergonomic handle, the AccuSharp fits neatly in either hand to accommodate both right- and left-handed users, and it includes a full-length guard that protects your fingers throughout the sharpening process. Fast, Effective Sharpening To get started sharpening, you simply place your knife on a table or counter top with the cutting edge up. Hold the knife handle securely with one hand. Then let the "V" notch on the sharpener straddle the blade, and use your thumb to apply light pressure as you draw the AccuSharp down past the point of the blade. When you first use the AccuSharp on a blade, several passes may be required to make sure that your knife's cutting angle conforms to the AccuSharp angle. But once that angle is achieved the first time, it should take just two or three brief passes to put a sharp edge back on your knife--which means that sharpening fits into your busy schedule instead of interfering with it. Dependable, Long-Lasting Construction To deliver years of reliable use, AccuSharp sharpening blades are crafted from diamond-honed tungsten carbide, one of the hardest known materials. And because even the toughest industrial-quality blades eventually begin to show wear, AccuSharp's unique design allows you to reverse the blade to double its life span. Most users report an average of five to 10 years between blade replacements, which means that it's easy to ensure that your sharpener will be ready to go when you need it. AccuSharp Knife Sharpeners will not rust, and they can be cleaned easily with soap and water or in your dishwasher. What's in the Box AccuSharp 001 Knife Sharpener

Can Get it Like a Razor

by Jeremy Litz from on 2010-09-07
If used properly this item can get your knives, axes, and other blades just as sharp as a razor. The product seems quite durable for it being made of plastic. The price was unbeatable. Great little sharpener for fine tuning your blades.

Great purchase

by lorra from on 2010-08-31
For under 10 dollars I was easily able to sharpen my very nice knives. It normally costs me about 75 dollars to get a good edge back on my 11 knives. This handy little sharpener is well worth the money. I bought 2 so I could give one to my daughter.

Not as good as its reputation, won't give you a razor's edge

by J. Williamson from Huntington, WV USA on 2010-08-31
I've hand-sharpened knives for 25 or so years now, and have tried nearly every sharpening system and sharpening materials out there. In all of my considerable experience (sorry if that sounds a bit cocky), nothing beats hand-sharpening on flat whetstones that have a high grit, or using a leather strop with jeweler's rouge to polish up an edge to a glass smooth, super razor sharp edge.I kept hearing such wonderful things from people about how good of a sharpener this AccuSharp 001 knife sharpener is, so I decided, since I really like to have very sharp knives, to give it a try. I own several other sharpeners like this, both in design and in material (tungsten carbide), and have never been satisfied with the edge they produce. Before purchasing this product, probably the best I had tried before were sharpeners like the Smith Abrasives, Inc. PP1 Pocket Pal Knife Sharpener, which has both a tungsten carbide sharpener to quickly get a semi-sharp edge, and also a ceramic bladed sharpener to finish, or "polish" the edge into sharpness. This AccuSharp 001 sharpener is actually the best product of this kind I have tried. Despite only having the tungsten carbide blades, it actually gives a good knife a decent edge. I tried this product on cheap 440A stainless steel (no name Wally World type knives), 440HC stainless steel (typical Buck knife blade material, which is pretty decent steel), to high quality blade materials like high carbon 1095 steel (Ontario, SOG, some Cold Steel, Spyderco, and a few others) and VG-1 and VG-10 stainless steels (again, SOG, some Cold Steel, Spyderco, Benchmade, etc).Even on high quality steel blades, this sharpener only delivers a decent edge. Not a razor edge, but a decent edge. No offense to the previous reviewer, I like to use a knife for its intended purpose...to cut through something with MINIMAL effort...which cannot be done without at LEAST a razor edge. Whether I'm preparing dinner, to woodworking, etc etc, I simply must have a razor's edge at the least to work with, to make my work go easier.I have still found no better method that using high grit flat stones, followed by polishing with a leather strop and jeweler's rouge, to give me that super razor edge on good quality steel that I prefer to use.SO, if you only want a pretty decent edge to work with, then this product is, hands down, the best one to use to give you that decent edge. Just make sure you follow the instructions and only use very, very slight pressure, or you'll never get that decent edge.If what you want or need is a razor edge, or super razor edge, then this product will disappoint you. It all depends on what you want/need.But, again, as far as this type of sharpener goes, this is by far the best one I've used.

Bang for your Buck!

I got this knife as a kind of look good knife just to show of to my friends. When i got it it was very sharp and over all sturdy knife. But for the price its even better then $100 knifes. If your looking for a flashy knife this is a good choice, if not, if you want it for your EDC don't get it, too heavy and not practical.

Solid Knife At A Great Price!

by Stephan from Milpitas, CA United States on 2010-08-16
This is a lot of knife for under $50. The blade is thick and feels very strong. The blade comes extremely sharp right out of the box. I gently ran it on my arm and all the hair fell right off! The handle is a little small and for those with large hands, it may be too small but I didn't have any problems with it. The nylon sheath is very nice and has aa plastic insert inside for the blade so that the blade won't cut the nylon sheath when inserting or removing. The blade is made in Taiwan... I felt I made a good purchase!

SOG, but slippery handle

I have a few Japanese made SOG knives. A Navy veteran friend has the Seal Pup made in Seki-Japan. All great knives. This Taiwan model has a rather slippery handle. The blade shape is excellent; balance good; warranty great. But what good is it if the handle doesn't feel and function good when wet and cold?

I love this knife

I love this knife. I first became acquainted with the M-37 while in the service. From the quality steel to its razor sharp edge to the full tang handle, this knife feels good in your hand. As a retired law enforcement officer, I carry the knife for self-defense and the multi-position sheath makes this very easy to carry. What's not to love about this knife? Man, I love it!!

Best known for his early rock hits such as "Splish Splash," by the early '60s Bobby Darrin had pretty much abandoned rock and recast himself as something of a finger poppin', tuxedo wearing, youth-camp version of Sinatra. Surprisingly, it worked. While he lacks Frank's chops, the swinging "By the Sea" and "Mack The Knife" are two of the best latter-day Sinatra imitations, and there's no denying his light touch on "Lazy River." He even had the guts to take on "Guys and Dolls," a song identified with the Chairman. As good as this album is, it only gives a fraction of Darrin's talents. For a broader picture (including his late 60's transformation into a jeans wearing folkie), check out Rhino's Darrin box, As Long As I'm Singing. --Steven Mirkin

Darrin the best

Bobby Darrin was one of the best, Sinatra was the King, Darrin was the Prince , first in line to the throne , I was in the English Pub in NYC the day it came over the air that Darrin had died on the operating table, We knew he was sick, but not that sick, Sadly missed by all fan's of quality music throughout the world, This album is a Five Star recording, A must for the Darrin fan. Bobby's sitting on a cloud looking down, snapping his finger's in time and smiling.

Fabulous

by Daniel Berger from Atlanta, GA USA on 2005-02-18
This has become one of my alltime favorite albums, and the best of the five Darin albums I've got."Mack the Knife" is one of the greatest songs ever. Lots of people have done this, including Sinatra and Louis Armstrong, but no one touches Bobby Darin's version here. This song will live as long as bars have jukeboxes. "Lazy River" is strangely evocative; it somehow combines the hazy, lazy sense with his ferocious delivery. "Beyond the Sea" is right up there with "Mack the Knife." I believe it has undertones of being with the one you love, after death. It's one of the most romantic songs ever. His "Guys and Dolls" just assassinates this song. It swings like crazy. All the blues numbers in here - "Was There A Call for Me" "I Guess I'm Good For Nothing But the Blues" "Black Coffee" and "Pete Kelly's Blues" - are fine. They draw vivid pictures in the imagination; Darin sells them completely."Clementine" is politically incorrect but true to the original and still wonderful; you wouldn't think a corny traditional song like that could be delivered with 10 tons of dynamite like he does. Ditto "Bill Bailey." (This was something he apparently excelled at, resuscitating traditional songs most vocalists wouldn't bother with and making them work.)Darin wrote "Artificial Flowers" and shows that social consciousness wasn't the sole property of folk-singing pukes with acoustic guitars. At least two people I know cried when I first played this song for them."I Didn't Know What Time It Was" and "Just Friends" make a pair on this album that has private meaning for me: My first foray into jazz in college involved Charlie Parker; the first Bird album I ever had also had versions of these two songs on it. This is the only other album I know that does both - I'd never heard the words before - and this says something about the versatility of both the standards songbook and Bobby Darin. Bebopper on the one hand, rock `n roller cum Vegas singer on the other hand."Skylark" - you can just see the bluest of skies when he sings this. "Christmas Auld Lang Syne" almost makes me want to celebrate Christmas. (I'm Jewish.) I think it speaks to Christmas as people imagine they'd like to have it.

SHARIN' DARIN

by STEPHEN T. McCARTHY from a Mensa-donkey in Phoenix, Airheadzona. on 2004-11-14
It strikes me that the individual human response to music is one of life's most intriguing mysteries. What is that unexplainable thing inside us that resonates to a certain combination of musical notes, or to the tonal quality of particular instruments, but not others? And why is this response not universal? For me, the melody of MY FAVORITE THINGS is so pretty, so clever, so powerful that I can't hear it once without it bouncing around inside my skull for the next several hours. And yet I know people who are apathetic about it. How can that be? We even find this mystery taking place between people who inhabit the same musical orbit. The "King Of Rock 'N' Roll" might have two devoted fans; the first who loves SUSPICIOUS MINDS and MEMORIES, but is not overly thrilled by HOUND DOG and IN THE GHETTO. The second fan's opinion is the complete reversal. Some might think that this is comparable to our myriad responses to food flavors, but in that example there is a physiological explanation - something to do with chemical reactions in the glands, the taste buds. With music it's entirely intangible; some "it" within the inner being that responds, makes the body move, the toes tap, the mind rejoice. . .or mourn. That "it" within me loves Bobby Darin's music, but "it" is selective. "It" doesn't care for Darin's pop hits, of which only a few appear on this collection. And although "it" digs LAZY RIVER which has one of the greatest, most energetic vocal performances ever, we play this album for the fabulously moving standard ballads (some with big band arrangements.) WAS THERE A CALL FOR ME; I GUESS I'M GOOD FOR NOTHING BUT THE BLUES; DON'T DREAM OF ANYBODY BUT ME; WHAT A DIFFERENCE A DAY MADE; BLACK COFFEE; SKYLARK; and even CHRISTMAS AULD LANG SYNE, these are the reasons you find me in this place. "It" likes 'em!There is a certain something, a quality, in Darin's voice that can be discerned on his ballads; an innate melancholia that can't be taught, nor faked. I have found this in the voices of only two other singers: the jazz vocalist, Astrud Gilberto, and Karen Carpenter, who had it in spades! In fact, so much so that it sometimes bled through even on her uptempo numbers like TOP OF THE WORLD and SING. It's a kind of faint whisper of an intense inner aloneness, or a vague remembrance of something; a wistful yearning for what has passed and can't be retrieved, like a dream of something that glowed golden way back when, in the recesses of the mind. Hell, I don't know what it is, but "it" sure loves it! Anyway, that quality permeates so much of these recordings and that's why "it" makes me play them so often. If you know what I'm yakking about here, and if it appeals to your "it" too, then also obtain a used copy of the "out-of-print", 'CLASSIC DARIN' if you can locate one at a reasonable price. This collection also contains many ballad tracks like WHERE LOVE HAS GONE; FLY ME TO THE MOON; A TASTE OF HONEY; SOFTLY, AS I LEAVE YOU; and SOMEWHERE with Bobby's "blue" voice thang goin' on.According to his 2004, July 14th review, it seems that The Big Dong, doesn't have this same "it" inside of him. You think maybe I should go see if his priest can exorcise my "it" too?

It has his swingers, but too many ballads, which Darrin

Daris was many things a 50's rock'n'roller teeny bopper, a rockon' cowboy, and a vegas swingin' lounger, but he COULD NOT sing ballads. He just doesn't do well with songs like Black Coffee, when he sings a 3 minute ballad it seems like 10 minutes of terror. This cd does however have his greatest swinger son one cd Artificial Flowers, Beyond The Sea, and Mack The Knife, with a few midtempos taht he handles well by rockin' and rollin' hsi way thru swing standards liek Bill Bailey, Down With Love and Clemintine. A good cd, if only there were no ballads and all swingers! Still a good disc!

Very handy mini tool

by Ken from Boston on 2010-07-06
I carry a Swiss Army knife with me frequently. This one is a little larger than the model I typically carry, but having a nail clipper has proven to be very useful.

Useful item, but wrong color

by Chocolate from on 2010-06-16
I ordered this knife because I have this knife and I really like it. I ordered one for my husband, but it was actually purple! It looks more blueish on the screen. I had to send it back. But, other than that it is a great tool to have.

Good quality, but a bit wider than you might expect

by A. Saunders from Virginia, USA on 2010-05-05
They never show side pictures of these type of knives because they are surprisingly wide. This may dissuade you from carrying it in your pocket. But, it's better than carrying a separate pen knife and nail clipper.Nail clippers are not as good/easy to use as a cheap pair of dedicated clippers, but, again, you get the multi use.

great little pocket tool!

by Samantha Forrest from on 2010-03-04
It is perfect! Every little tool I need in a small package. I especially like the nail clipper. It's the only pocket knife I have seen with a clipper built in.

Great fingernail clippers!

by Burning up in Texas from Texas on 2010-02-01
I own several pairs of these wonderfully designed pocket nail clippers. The design makes for a no-snag easy to carry package with a couple of extras. The clippers themselves have a very sharp and functional cutting edge. There is an easy to use nail file that is separate from the clippers and a nice small sized knife blade too! The scissors on this tool are a little strange with the serrations but they seem to cut very well and can cut through some pretty tough stuff! Since they are made by the Genuine Swiss Army Knife maker they have the Tweezers and a little plastic toothpick as well. The tweezers are actually very useful and seem to work pretty good for their small size. There is a no knife blade version of these clippers that will generally pass airport security. They have a small eyeglass sized flat screwdriver in place of the blade. My advice? Get one of each, and there is a great color assortment too!
