MMA: Mixed Martial Arts

What is MMA? The acronym stands for mixed martial arts. This is a kind of struggle that mixes a number of different techniques of the various martial arts. It is sometimes called is not anti-barred. Historically, mixed martial arts began around the end of 1800 but it was not until the decade MMA of 1970 that became popular through film. Bruce Lee and his film series Dragon brought his unique fighting style struggles to care worldwide. Its style combines all types of combat Jiu-Jitsu and Karate to more western styles such as boxing.

Mixed martial arts were not recognized as an official sport until 1992 the introduction of the Ultimate Fighting Championship. A form of mixed martial arts, wrestling, which has its origins as an Olympic sport in the way back to Greece A. 648 C. is currently under consideration for inclusion as an Olympic sport. It combines the arts of both wrestling and boxing. Pancracio has done a remarkable renaissance in recent decades and especially since the mid-1990s. This renaissance is due mainly to the increase in mixed martial arts (MMA) competitions. MMA is now one of the fastest growing sports that provides an additional impetus to be part of the Olympic Games.

The structure of the rules MMA is still very rudimentary and non-standard. In fact, until about ten years ago had none at all. This at a time made mixed martial arts was a brutal combat sport, which poses a health risk to all involved. The focus of â € ~ anything goes € ™ led to many injuries serious fighters.

The introduction of rules designed to make certain movements damaging illegal. This included the head thrust, lift up your eyes and bite. Other areas that were considered off limits were the groin, throat and kidney areas. There have been growing calls for a uniform set of rules, but because MMA is no global governing body, each country has a different set of rules. In general, the professional fights have rules less stringent than those amateur fights and fans are supposed to need more protection.

A mixed martial arts competition will consist of three stages. The first stage is the fight standing and includes kicking, punches, elbow and knee techniques. The second stage involves strengthening the fight and holding your opponent to prevent them striking against you. The final stage ground fighting which is where you hold down and immobilize their opponent.

Most MMA fighters wear gloves when small fighting. Some prefer the use of gloves finger open while others prefer the closed, they are a bit small, like boxing gloves. Sometimes the type of glove allowed depend on the type of struggle, the category weight of the struggle is and in what country the fight is staged.

There are different ways to win a mixed martial arts Fighta € "knockout flies (KO) by TKO (TKO) and medical intervention. Referees may end in a contest, if it considers that a boxer has taken enough punishment before serious injury is inflicted. Fighters may also be disqualified after a certain number of warnings or use of illegal movements.

Pretty good collection

by B. Ware from USA on 2010-01-30
These are not classics in my opinion but they are good solid martial arts films. The two discs in the set I received were labeled WIDESCREEN on the discs and played nicely on my dvd player and HDTV once I selected a good screen format. You can get this at a great price through Amazon sellers. Here are summarized descriptions based on the back cover of the dvd:MILITANT EAGLE: A soldier returning home joins forces with villagers seeking justice after their families are brutally slain.THE PRODIGAL BOXER: Fei Meng plays Fong Sai-Yuk, beloved hero of Chinese lore.MOONLIGHT SWORD AND JADE LION: Mao Yin (Angela Mao) is a woman on a heroic quest to find her teacher's missing brother.THE BLOODY FISTS: Yuen Wo Peng stages the tale of a fugitive loner defending a village against marauders. These are English language versions so no subtitles or original language unfortunately.

A Very Good Documentary

by W. Han from on 2001-07-20
Narrated by John Saxon, who played a fellow martial artist in "Enter the Dragon" with Bruce Lee, Sammo Hung, Jackie Chan... Wait, they're all potrayed in this tape! Along with Jet Li and the others this documentary gives you insight on how it is to be a martial artist. Gives you good, clean information and very crisp fight scenes.

An excellent history lesson

by from New Rochelle, NY United States on 2001-07-02
This could be the best martial arts tape I have ever had the pleasure of purchasing. The scenes contained in this compilation are some of the very best ever caught on film and until just recently, thanks to the popularity of Jackie Chan and Jet Li, had never been seen by a U.S. audience. This tape basically gives you a history of the martial arts in film. It starts with the granddaddy of them all Bruce Lee in some amazing and rare footage. The tape then goes into detail about the stars of today (today being the lates to mid 80's) and shows a number of clips from their movies. I highly recommend this tape for any Jackie Chan fan or Martial Laws Sammo Hung. They have clips of these stars in their prime when the could arguably called the biggest action stars in the world. Yes the U.S. rarely opened the doors to these Asian stars who took most of the rest of the world by storm.Towards the end of the tape it takes you into more of the cult aspects of martial art films. Mostly films with wire work and mystical plots even Ninjas! If you are unsure of getting that one Jackie Chan tape or that one Jet Li tape, take a look at this one first. You will not be disappointed!

Description

The urge to forge one’s character by fighting, in daily life as well as on the mat, appeals to something deep within us. More than a collection of fighting techniques, martial arts constitute a path to developing body, spirit, and awareness. On the Warrior’s Path connects the martial arts with this larger perspective, merging subtle philosophies with no-holds-barred competition, Nietzsche with Bruce Lee, radical Taoism and Buddhism with the Star Wars Trilogy, traditional martial arts with basketball and American Indian culture. At the center of all these phenomena is the warrior. Though this archetype seems to manifest contradictory values, author Daniele Bolelli describes the heart of this tension: how the training of martial technique leads to a renunciation of violence, and how overcoming fear leads to a unique freedom. Aimed at students at any level or tradition of martial arts but also accessible to the armchair warrior, On the Warrior’s Path brings fresh insights to why martial arts remains an enduring and widespread art and discipline. Two new chapters in this second edition focus on spirituality in the martial arts and the author’s personal journey in the field. From the Trade Paperback edition.

For the warrior poet in all of us.

by John from on 2010-07-01
Daniele Bolelli writes a wonderful book for the truth seeker, mystic adventurer in all of us. It explores martial arts from the spiritual and philosophical perspectives in such a way, that one could apply the principles to almost any aspect of your life. An exploration of the passions within an individual, and the ways that the art form of martial arts can channel and fuel those passions. It is written poetically, and with no shortage of wit, and also includes a great overview of the different branches of martial arts and a snapshot into some of their strengths. Enjoy!

A great book on martial arts and life.

by shadow from on 2010-06-27
Mr. Bolelli's book came to me at a time in my life when I needed a new perspective. In the midst of divorce and a serious look at the motivations of my life, I embraced many things that were eloquently presented in this book. This is the second edition and the additional material is well thought and personal. At least it felt personal to me. The chapter "On Failed Friendships, Martial Arts, Nietzche, and Self Perfection" spoke to many things that I had difficulty finding the words to explain, for most of my life.My definition of a great book, is one that can be read and re read over and over again. Each time a new insight or a thought occurs to you with every read. This book is not a dusty recap of history and philosophy. It is a living and breathing discussion in a rocking chair on breezy summer afternoon. Mr. Bolelli writes in a warm and friendly style, without taking himself too seriously.I cannot wait for his next book.Buy this one while you wait, you will not be disappointed.

Cutting-edge wit and down-to-earth style. A true gem.

by Paul Seaman from Concord, CA (SF Bay Area) on 2009-03-11
I picked up this book because of one passage I read while browsing in a bookstore. (Yes, I later BOUGHT the book--through Amazon...) "To be truly walking on the warrior's path, we have to bring our minds back to the time when we were not ashamed of our dreams; when reality had not yet frustrated our ambitions; when our desire was still too strong to be repressed, and our spirit refused to surrender in resignation; when we were not yet doctors, businessmen, or lawyers, but still wanted to be heroes, leaders, bodhisattvas. The first step on the way to being warriors is to get back in touch with our dreams." (p. 104)Need I say more? The rest of the book is almost as good, written with obvious personal passion, knowledge of the subject (Asian martial arts, esp. Chinese kung fu), and a refreshing sense of humor. He has the unusual gift of being able to write philosophically without sounding pretentious or putting you to sleep. It's the kind of book that now has highlighting marks on almost every page. And as a curious aside, this guy was born in Italy, apparently not a native English speaker, though he writes better than most Americans, and he wrote this book in his early twenties!A final cue: How can you not be impressed with a guy who quotes from both Frederich Nietzsche and Pearl Jam in the same subhead? And who counts Richard Strossi-Heckler among his close friends? Strossi is an aikido master and psychologist, and the author of "In Search of the Warrior Spirit: Teaching Awareness Discipines to the Green Berets"--one of my all-time favorite books.

a fantastic read

not just for martial artists. A book rich in history, philosophy, mythology and more importantly: Life. I could not put it down. Do yourself a favor and buy this book.

Better than the First Edition

by Frank H. from USA on 2008-09-18
This second edition of this modern classic on philosophy and martial arts is even better than the original, for it contains two great extra chapters in addition to all the old material. In an on-line interview, the author himself has stated that one of the new chapters (the last one) is his favorite among anything he has ever written. One of the extra chapters is about the relationship between combat sports and traditional martial arts, and about the need to combine philosophy with action. As Bolelli puts it, "more sweat and less talk". This is a very enjoyable chapter, but it pales in comparison to the last one: an unlikely but beautiful essay about friendship, loneliness, the philosophy of Friedrich Nietzsche, and the deeper emotional urges driving us toward martial arts. Here we can see Bolelli at his best. If you own the original edition, either get this or check it out at the library because the new material is worth it.
