Systema: Russian Martial Arts
Martial arts. Just the name brings all sorts of near mystical thoughts to our minds. Thoughts on the wonderful Korean martial art of Tae Kwon Do, the Japanese martial art of jujutsu and the Chinese martial art of kung fu.
All these martial arts have humble beginnings. Each one came a time when local authorities tyrannical and outlawed the commoners from having weapons. Farmers, however, insisted that ways to protect themselves, regardless of weapons. So, martial arts were born.
Russia is no exception. Russia has a long history of internal conflict and invasion. It is a huge country with boundaries covering more than 11 time zones. The Russians came to expect the unexpected when in battle and no two enemies to fight them.
From these meetings, the warriors of Russia became the type of fighter he reacted instinctively. They had to face the enemy as an individual and adapt to what the enemy launched against them. Russian martial arts had to be as versatile as the men who practice it.
Russia is so great that, in principle, a standard army was not possible. There were also small towns and villages scattered throughout the country and many lords and territories, which made this type of organization almost impossible.
During wartime, men were recruited from the cities and towns to fight and when the battle was over, he went home. During peacetime, these men continue to train on their own. The Russian martial art were tailored to fit the common man.
Systema is not prearranged kumite (combat choreographed two man) as the martial arts of the Far East. Russian martial arts are fluid - the goal of being able to fight without conscience.
Like many forms of oriental martial arts, russian martial arts began with an "ideal" and became in many different styles that way through Russia, each oriented towards specific needs that locale. The basic principles remained constant and always the theme of Russian martial arts.
Over time, the teachings loose solidified. The various cities and towns to show their skills with friendly competition between themselves. It was not until 1917 - when the Communists had taken power - that all traditions, including the martial art of Russia, were banned.
The system went into hiding rather that face severe persecution to continue outward practice. As in the Far East, some monasteries survived and were abandoned by the government and the monks to continue to keep "old fashioned" alive. Parents also teach their children, handing down traditions from generation to generation hoping she would survive.
When the new Soviet government had to focus on arming their soldiers, who sent agents to find the best systems fighter in the world. They do not have to look too far, the answer was right under his nose. From that point on, the Russian army began instruction in a millenary technique drawn from roots of their own heritage.
The martial arts have continued to grow in popularity in recent years, and the systems Russian martial art is no different. While it is mostly used by Russian Special Operation Units, the form spread to the western world, when several soldiers came Russia after the Cold War ended.

Excerpt: Sambo (Russian: ; ), also called Sombo, is an acronym for SAMozashchita Bez Oruzhiya which means "defense without weapons", in Russian, is a martial art and combat sport. It is considered relatively modern since its development began in 1923 by the Soviet Red Army to improve their hand to hand combat systems. Intended to be a merger of the most effective techniques of other martial arts, Sambo has roots in Japanese judo and Karate plus traditional folk styles of wrestling such as: Armenian Kokh, Georgian Chidaoba, Romanian Trînt, Tatar Körä, Uzbek Kurash, Mongolian Khapsagay and Azerbaijani Gulesh. The pioneers of Sambo were Viktor Spiridonov and Vasili Oshchepkov. Oshchepkov was executed under the orders of Stalin during the political purges of 1937 after accusations of being a Japanese spy. Oshchepkov spent much of his life living in Japan and training judo under its founder Kano Jigoro. The two men independently developed two different styles, which eventually cross-polinated and became what is known as Sambo. Compared to Oshchepkov's judo based system, then called "Freestyle Wrestling", Spiridonov's style was softer and less strength dependent. This was in large part due to Spiridonov's injuries sustained during World War I. Anatoly Kharlampiev, a student of Victor Spiridonov, is often officially considered the founder of Sport Sambo. In 1938, it was recognized as an official sport by the USSR All-Union Sports Committee.
