Camping Supplies

Using the proper, high quality outdoor gear is the key to having a safe and enjoyable outdoor experience. Whether you're hiking 100 miles, hunting deer, or just camping with friends, nothing ruins a good time faster than broken or unusable equipment. Camping supplies are much easier to find now in everyday stores, but many beginning campers make the mistake of buying whichever tent their local store sells. These tents are usually very low quality, made with inferior materials, and easy to break.

By buying a high quality tent, you can camp in almost any situation and trust that your tent will hold up. It's also possible to find much more durable and protective tents by shopping with an experienced outdoor gear dealer. Tents are available that provide protection from below freezing temperatures, that can be pitched on the side of a steep hill, or that shed water extremely well for wet conditions. These kinds of tents can't be found in most big box stores.

Even occasional or hobby campers should invest in a decent quality tent. Camping in one of the lower quality dome tents is not always the most fun experience. Leaks are common, as well as drafts from poorly placed netting or badly sewn seams. Many beginners assume that when camping in a tent, it's just not possible to be comfortable. But once they get a chance to spend the night in a real camper's tent, they find out that it's simply not true.

Eureka Tents makes some of the highest quality solo or double occupancy tents on the market today. The company was founded in 1895, and has produced tents for use in World War 2. Tents from Eureka are trustworthy, and designed to withstand fairly extreme weather conditions. But Eureka also produces higher occupancy tents, up to 7 people, for less rugged experiences. These tents are still very well made, and of a much higher quality than you will find in the sports section of a large store.

Of course, a tent is only one of the camping supplies a well prepared outdoor enthusiast needs. A portable water filter is a great thing to have, especially if camping or hiking far into unpopulated forest or National Parks. Prepared hikers always pack enough water, but it's possible to lose the packed water, for the containers to break open and spill, or for the water to become polluted and dangerous to drink. Carrying a portable water filter can be the difference between life and death, especially on long hikes.

These small and portable filters can remove particles, sediment, and bacteria out of any water source. This makes the water cleaner than simply boiling, and works faster and without a fire. By carrying a water filter a hiker can shed the weight of heavy and cumbersome water containers, and can keep moving while drinking instead of stopping to build a fire at every stream or river. Filtering bags with a drip line can also be bought for established camps, and can hold up to 50 gallons of filtered water at a time. The hanging bag also protects the water from being re-contaminated or spilled.

Where can I send my hunting knife to be sharpened? (Christchurch)?

I bought a Gerber hunting knife (with serrated edge)a while ago which probably has not been sharpened, I tried to sharpen it myself but barely did anything to the knife, can someone tell me where can I find a professional knife sharpener who can sharpen my knife? Best to be in Christchurch. Thanks~

Look in the yellow pages under knives. I am sure there are several places that would be happy to resurface your knife for a few bucks.

Also try going to a few gun shows. There always seems to be someone there selling knife sharpeners that will show you how to use yours. The serrated edges should not need sharpening but the regular flat blade does.

Solid Gerber Knife

Picked the kniife up a few weeks ago for use on camping and kayaking trips. Very pleased with the purchase.

A very handy knife and a great value! I really like it!

by Douglas Waski from Boise, ID USA on 2010-08-04
I chose the Big Rock because I wanted a medium length, plain edged, fixed-blade with full-tang construction for strength, a lanyard hole, and nice ergonomics, all at a price that was easy to swallow. A combination straight/serrated edge is also available. I know there are better knives out there, but they are considerably more expensive and I didn't want to worry if I damaged it. Turns out the Big Rock is up to any task and is a pleasure to use!I took the knife on a weeklong camping trip and found it quite handy. Since we forgot to pack our kitchen knives, we used the Big Rock for food prep: thin-slicing tri-tip, veggie prep, and pizza cutting. The blade has a gentle curve which makes it easy to rock back and forth over food, if you don't want to slice. Rough duty, eh? :) The grippy handle felt great and was completely secure even when greasy and wet when cutting the raw meat. It feels nicely balanced and manipulates very easily for these lighter tasks.I also made a few feather sticks and did some light batoning for fire prep. The blade is decently thick at the spine (5/32" or 4mm) so I wasn't terribly worried about beating on it. The wood I split wasn't particularly hard or dense, so the knife made short work of it with no visible damage -a piece of cake! As far as the feather sticks went, the blade cut easily and handled well; it has a mild thumb ramp, but a thicker grip would increase comfort when making any tougher cuts. This is just my opinion, but the biggest drawback would be the sheath. It's nylon, with an overly large belt loop and has a snap retainer for the blade (which is the only part I like). The material doesn't feel very durable and I don't care for the aesthetics. The huge belt loop is mounted on the top, so the knife flops around a bit, with no way to secure it to your leg, or even to mount it to a bag / pack. It does, however, serve its purpose of holding the knife on your belt.PROS: very comfortable grip*, feels nicely balanced, and is very sharp out of the box. The thickness of the blade and the fact that it's a full tang knife makes me feel pretty good about its durability. Can't beat the price!CONS: *Although comfortable, I wish the grip was a smidge thicker. The sheath is a bit disappointing, but it has a hard insert, so I'm considering removing the insert and putting it into a sheath that I sew together myself.Overall, I'm very happy with it and would recommend it. It's a pretty decent fixed blade for those on a budget.

This knife is wicked.

by JetJagger from Atlanta, GA on 2010-06-17
The Gerber Big Rock feels as if it was fashioned for my hands only. I personally don't think I've held such a comfortable knife. The blade is thick, but the handle material is "comfortably thin" like a fighting knife and perfect for gloved hands. Sure, the sheath leaves something to be desired, but there really isn't anything wrong with its design as some people suggest. It's not intended to be a molle-capable sheath, but rather, it's designed for easy-on/easy-off belting and chucking into a tackle box if need-be.I purchased the Gerber Profile fixed blade, too. Both knives together are an excellent pair. I'd use the Big Rock for medium-to-heavy-duty chores (such as battoning wood, hacking branches, or fighting grizzly bears and werewolves) while I'd use the Profile for all other general utility work. Make no mistake, though ~ the Profile is a wicked knife in its own right, but it's blade is a tad bit shorter and thinner than the Big Rock's making it more "kitchen-friendly" or "warehouse-appropriate". That being said, the Profile's handle is thicker, softer, and designed for serious sweaty-hand gripping action.I paid a total of about $45 for both knives, and I am one happy camper...literally.-

Butch is known as "Mr. Mechanism" in the custom-knife world, a tribute to his unique designs and exceptional understanding of opening and locking mechanisms. This new, proprietary blade opening concept means that you can deploy your knife quickly and easily using just one hand.Of course, when a job calls for more deliberate actions, you can also open this knife in the traditional way, using the thumb stud. With a strong, sharp blade, you can make the cuts you want quickly and efficiently. That's why Gerber uses a high-carbon stainless steel blade on the FAST Draw. This large, 2.99-inch blade offers a fine-edged cutting surface that can easily be sharpened using standard methods. FAST Draw is the first in a series of knives utilizing "Fast Technonogy." Texturing on the handle surface ensures a secure grip for improved control. At just 3.6 ounces, the slim FAST Draw knife is light enough to take with you anywhere. The knives were so popular, Mr. Gerber ultimately left his agency to launch Gerber Legendary Blades in 1939.For more than half a century, Gerber Legendary Blades has been helping people fend for themselves. Wonderful Design and Utility

by M. Woodward from VA on 2010-08-22
This assisted opening 3' blade knife is wonderful. I've given several away as gifts. No one mentions the intuitive position of the pocket clip. For right handers this allows the draw of the knife from the rim of the right pocket, the release of the safety if on, and the quick opening of the blade all in one motion. You don't have to turn the knife over or around or fiddle for the safety. It's also not too large to crowd the pocket or be uncomfortable full time carry. If you are a rightie and want a 3' blade knife GET THIS ONE.

Great Knife!

by Swagger B from on 2010-08-05
The Gerber Fast Draw is a really good knife. It has good grip and a nice fine edge. I recommend this knife over the Mini Fast Draw because this knife is a good size but anything smaller would be hard to get a firm grip on. The thumb stud might take some getting used to but once you get the hang of it its easy.(I can now open it with one hand)Great knife!

Great knife!

by D. Cohen from on 2010-06-24
Gerber is one of my favorite knifemakers, and although I've had some disappointments with them in the past, this knife is definitely not one of them. It's solidly build, the action is smooth (although the sound of it opening is not a satisfying click as I would like) and it feels great in the hand. I was wary at first of where the locking mechanism was, thinking it would be awkward, but it's actually quite natural. This knife has become my preferred everyday carry since I got it, and certainly for the price, it's an excellent value.

Good Easy Open Knife - Recommended!

by CFH from Blue Ridge Summit, PA USA on 2010-06-01
I bought my first Gerber "Fast Draw" knife to replace a lost Gerber "EZ Out" knife that I carried for almost 15 years, so they had a lot to live up to. While Amazon usually has the best prices (about 2/3 cheaper), I went to a big box "outfitter" store to try out some different models since knives are tools that you really have to hold to see if they are "right" for you. Here are my observations:Pros: + Easy to open one handed, the spring assist is very helpful + Positive lock, working to keep it closed and open, which is useful for keeping all of your fingers attached + Sharp blade right out of the package and it holds an edge nicely + Sturdy belt clipCons: - Somewhat "cheesy" looking grip, I almost passed it up without trying it out because it looked cheap to me - Mechanism was a little rough, but got much better with useWhile I doubt these knives will last as long as my last Gerber, they are very good tools for daily use in our small shop.Recommended!CFH

Good work knife

by Charles M. Cline from Oregon on 2010-05-28
I use this little knife every day as a beat um up work knife. The steel holds an edge pretty well. The scales are a little hard feeling in the hand but acceptable. I rated this tool as a 4 star only because the sliding lock tends to freeze up a little. Maybe it will perform better with extended use.

Very pleasantly surprised

by J. Welch from Manassas, VA on 2010-05-27
I lost my Buck Stockman pocket knife. It is no longer made so I despaired of replacing it. After some fairly extensive searching I bought this one. The price made me worry about the quality but when I received it all concerns vanished. It isn't perfect, the bolster "snags" a little bit, but overall it is much nicer than the price would indicate (compared with other brand's Stockmans). The blades are very well made, almost a mirror finish - the grinding marks are very fine and not intrusive.Note that this knife is a bit wider than many. The stag portion extends a little wider than my previous knife. This, of course, is Yin-and-Yang. It's bulky in a pocket but it's very easy to use and grip.

very impressive Chinese pocketknife

by M. Swaim from NC United States on 2010-04-04
Thanks to the reviews on Amazon, I knew in advance that this Gerber was made in China. I ordered it fully prepared to send it back. However, after receiving it, there's no way it's going back. The fit and finish on this knife easily compares to that on Bulldog's, Hen & Rooster's, Queen, Case and perhaps even Schatt & Morgan. For those who know fine folders, that's saying a lot. What makes this one so impressive is that it sells for a third to a fourth of what those other brands sell for and actually has a few features not found on most small stockmen knives such as a locking main blade and etched bolsters. My sample "walks and talks", meaning that even the two slipjoint blades snap into place with the proper click. A caution on price, I've seen this knife for sale from $12 to $35 so pick your best deal. The one thing I don't like about it is the Sambar Stag handles, while handsome, are considerably thicker than what I've come to expect on a small stockman knife. This means it's a fat little thing that does create a minor pocket bulge and is perhaps a bit heavier than it really needs to be. But, at less than $20 with free shipping, I'd say this is a no-brainer. I may even order more of these as gifts.

Not bad for the money

by Jeffrey S. Alek from Annandale, VA on 2010-01-05
"Heirloom quality" for a made in China knife of this price, that is pushing it. "Here son, take this to remind yourself of when we sold out ot China". However it is well made and solid. Nice gift/token, but the small box it came in was torn and scuffed, definitely been opened and messed with, and I hate giving gifts that look like that. If I had not got this for $16, after the lightning deal, I would have returned it for that reason. And did not gift it for that reason Lenght is just over 3" same as a Swiss Army, but it is definitely not a Swiss Army. I placed it in my tackle box for fishing, but My Swiss Army knife still goes with me camping, now that is an "heirloom".

Great Knife...You Will Not Be Disappointed

by Reba Dad from Folsom, CA United States on 2009-12-28
I am not a knife carrying type of person. You know...the kind that has a chain looped down their leg to secure a wallet in the back pocket. That is definitely not me! However I found the need to have a small and compact knife on my person for opening packages and other routine tasks. I got this knife because it was on a Gold Box deal and paid less than $15 for it. I was not expecting much. I was wrong!! This is a Great little knife with 3 very different but fully functional blades. And, man, are they Sharp! The main blade locks in the open position and is easily folded back up again with the press of a spring activated finger press on the top part of the knife. It fits neatly in my pocket and I don't even feel it is there until I need it and then I am very glad to find it and pull it out. My coworkers have been impressed with it and even knew the Gerber brand to be one of quality (which I had never heard of before). The antler horn body adds a nice touch of class too. Overall I am very happy with this product and may even start to look for a silver chain to securely hold my wallet...hahaha.

Thin, light, and sexy

by Alberto Vargas from San Francisco, CA USA on 2010-09-02
I recently bought this tool since I was looking for a lightweight tool for use when camping and hiking. Background: I have a bunch of different Leatherman models of tools, various sizes. This is the first Gerber that I actually decided to buy; many Gerber models are too flimsy or thick or heavy for my needs. Not the case here - I like this one. What's good:- only 5 oz weight, very light for a full sized tool - decent sized pliers, slide open easily with one hand - one handed opening knife, longer than the blade of a Swiss army knife - useful set of screwdrivers (flat, mini, philips) - innovative beer opener! - all tools lock, safer to use - feels comfortable in the hand - clips to your pants, no need for a caseWhat's lacking:- it would be nice to have scissors, file, and/or wood saw - some plastic parts (lock buttons) - because of plier design, rattles a little more than a LeathermanI am not sure where the negative reviews come from. This is a minimalist, lightweight tool intended for daily carry by people who are not mechanics and don't need to fix things all the time. The intended audience is probably backpackers or office workers. If you often need to fix things, both Gerber and Leatherman make beefier tools with more options, thicker pliers, etc, like the Leatherman Wave. While looking for light and minimalist multitools, I compared this with a Leatherman Freestyle. I purchased both, but I think I will return the Freestyle, since it lacks screwdrivers and cap lifter, and its pliers are thinner (easier to break) plus its knife is shorter and half serrated which is not good in my book.I think this is a very nice piece of gear. Time will tell of course.

Poorly made

by Dan from USA on 2010-06-16
I bought this multitool to replace a leatherman Skeletool I lost. What a mistake. Where the Leatherman felt solidly built, this thing feels cheaply made. The way the pliers deploy by sliding out of the handle is gimmicky at best. The small buttons that release the lock for the pliers get stuck all the time. The liner lock for the blade looks flimsy as well. This is the second Gerber product I have been disappointed with, and I will be staying away from this brand from now on.

Bizarre design

by Kwan L. Lowe from Florida, USA on 2010-03-12
Just received Octane a few hours ago. Unfortunately, first impressions are pretty dire.It is a good looking tool. It could be used, unchanged, as a prop in some science fiction survival movie. Interesting curves, high tech looking, and space age looking vents and finish. The blade is large and functional. There's a proper Phillips driver, a good flathead driver, and the locking system is sturdy that the tools don't rattle.Alas, there are many downsides. It is advertised as a one-hand opening tools. It can be done, it certainly isn't easy. Unlike other multi-tools, these pliers slide out from the handles. To open, depress both buttons on the handles on the tool and slide the plier jaws forward. Try doing that with one hand. Second biggest problem is that you need to open the pliers to get to the tools in the handle (except for the blade). Even with the pliers open, it's not exactly easy to do. Which brings us to the blade. As is apparent from the pictures, the blade covers seem something of afterthought, almost like a sidecar.

This locking plier has some screw and yoke kind of regulation and you can reach the fully closed position half way. Past this point you could think you can use it as a non locking plier (although you cant fold it) but, if you apply pressure as anyone would do with a regular plier, it snaps and... Now i have little pieces that came out of the handle (the side that took care of the locking) and a very very bad mood since i cant return the item from my country. Bottom line, i really should have gone with the already well tested crunch

Disappointing

Amazon sent me a previously returned one. It was returned with good reason, the blade liner lock did not engage. I'm not surprised that happened, the liner lock is just a small piece of sheet metal PRESSED into the frame. There's no rivet or weld, it's not part of the frame, it's just a thin piece of metal press fit on one end. With the low quality fit-and-finish of gerber multi-tools, that's bound to be an issue. The file is awful, it was no exaggeration the same texture as the knurling on my aluminum flashlight body (D10). The screwdriver is awful, on-par with the Gerber flick. The vice grip adjusting screw is hard to reach, and is hard to turn because the threads it rides on are poorly made.If you want a multi-tool, I'd suggest a Victorinox or Leatherman, namely the Swisstool or Wave. If you need vice grips, get a Leatherman Crunch (I have all 3 of the tools I mentioned and can say for sure they are much higher quality). If you want this just to collect, don't bother, the quality is far to low to be an interesting gadget, it's a hunk of poorly assembled metal. Also, shame on Amazon for sending me a returned item with a safety defect as a "new" item.
