Fixed Blade Hunting Knives

What is the best fixed blade knife outside?

I get a knife and I'm going to use for camping and hiking and hunting. Skinned and eviscerated, not yet. I will only spend $ 50-75 on it though. Thanks

sounds as if searching for what some might call a "utility" of the famous knife "Kabar" has been designated as a usefulness of combat "knife for what might suit you (also Ontario) - this is standard with 7" blade, but also make a short dress with 5-1/4 "blade I carried one made by Camilo for years and used it to cut trees down, dig latrines, and various other duties and has served me well - I prefer a 6 on the road with a bit of weight and special Buck woodsman are also pretty good I really liked the Cold Steel Recon Scout but only is now available in San Mai from $ 300 + - you can see SRK or the knife from his belt of Canada (a copy of a famous design) are SOG knives good reputation, but I have no experience with them Benchmade are very good you really need to determine what and how to use the knife to determine the size and how you want If you plan on using it to cut, you want a knife bigger and heavier than if you just cut going to list a few sites you can find interesting http://www.coldsteel.com/ http://www.agrussell.com/Default.asp?bhcd2 = 1237950533 http://www.knifecenter.com/ http://www.smkw.com/webapp / eCommerce / main_front.jsp http://www.knifeworks.com/index.aspx or you can assemble your ownhttp: / / www.texasknife.com / vcom / index.php

Satisfied, but

by John R. Coben from california on 2010-07-21
Nice knife, feels solid. It is just the right size to hang on your belt and forget until you need it. The sheath is garbage though, really needs something to prevent the knife from cutting through.

Good knife, bad sheath

by DoubleTrouble from on 2010-06-30
The knife itself is pretty awesome. However, it had already stabbed through the sheath by the time it had gotten to us. It is a simple woven cloth sheath so you can't expect much. So, overall, good knife but the sheath could be better quality. Not bad for the price though.

amazing knife and service

by Timothy J. Frazier from on 2010-06-17
This knife is very nice. it came sharp. the flint works really well if you use it correctly. the only thing is the knife came in black instead of the silver in the picture. its still sweet though. also, this knife was shipped with UPS first class and came three days after i placed my order. and the shipping was only 5 bucks!i'm very pleased with my purchase.

Sweet Little combo!...

by J. Vasco from Tacoma, WA on 2010-06-03
The fire starter alone is worth the price.. But you also get a very practical, tactical knife as well. Just the right size- not to big or small.. Seems sturdy and dependable enough for camping or hunting.. A real bargain for buyers! I'm really pleased with my purchase!!!

It's what you get for the price

by Jordan Neal Smith from Burlington, N.C. U.S.A. on 2010-05-11
It's kind of cool to have as a back up knife for simple tasks, but don't expect it to rock the boat. The kinfe itself is some sort of potmetal stainless, the wrapped handle sucks, I re-fit mine with 550 chord. It auctally is a pretty good thrower, well balanced and light enough. The sheath sucks too but it works, the velcrow strap is way too big, and there is also no inner guard for the blade, so you can slice right through the sheath. The fire steel works when you use the back of the blade it throws a pretty good spark. Overall its an ok blade to have in the collection, buy it and see what you think.

Wolf in sheep's clothing

by Tyler K. Smith from on 2010-08-12
I initially ordered this knife for college, because I wanted either a Kabar or a SOG fixed blade knife that I could carry without frightening my roommates or others...that is when I discovered the SOG Field Pup. At first glance (and even second glance) the Field Pup appears to be a rather plain and generic looking knife; however, it is far from average. In hand, the SOG Field Pup feels like top tier knife, but at 35 dollars it won't break the bank.Pros: CHEAP: for 35 dollars, it is a very high value knife Factory SHARP: the knife came sharper than any knife I have owned and that is including my straight razors I use to shave! Amazing and functional triangular jimping down the spine of the blade Lightweight Easily concealable even when worn on belt 4 inch blade AUS-8 steel is a great blade material that holds a good edge and has decent corrosion resistance Looks plain and unsuspecting (it's better not to scare people if you can help it) Sheath is MOLLE compatible and can be stitched onto any MOLLE vest Sheath is styled after the SOG Seal (Team/Pup) sheaths which are the best of the best Soft but durable kraton handleCons: The convex to concave shape of the blade make it more difficult to sharpen Shape of the handle makes prevents the blade from fitting all the way in the sheath The handle strap on the sheath uses velcro AND a button to hold the blade, its only slightly more secure but it is completely unnecessary and only makes it more difficult to secure your knife Satin polish smudged easily (only a problem if you have OCD)Although expensive knives are nice to own, I've grown to like high value knives just as much. The Field Pup is a great knife with only a few problems and is small enough to carry everywhere but large enough to use as a tactical knife.

Great Little Knife

by James Keener from Lake Havasu City, AZ on 2010-06-11
I bought 2 of these recently, 1 for my grandson and 1 for me. I have lots of large impressive-looking knives, some would be classed as survival knives and some are probably more for tactical use. But I needed a small, handy, all around knife for general camp tasks, etc. The Field Pup fills this niche well, and I don't think you will be disappointed if you purchase one. Very sharp out of the box, and the blade design is perfect for general duty. The blade, made of AUS 8, is thin enough for efficient slicing and has a slight recurve which should make for good draw cutting. On the spine just in front of the handle is a curved ramp with very well executed jimping, allowing a good "choke-up" hold for better control when doing fine work. The sheath is cordura nylon with a pouch on the front for any accessories you might want to put in there, such as a small sharpening stone, a firesteel, or a multi-tool. This type of sheath is becoming more and more common on many models of knife, and it seems that people either love them or hate them. I think it's just fine for the Field Pup. Since I'm no knife fighter, and primitive camping is pretty much a thing of the past for me, I suspect that I will find myself wearing the little Field Pup more than any of the other knives in my stable. You won't scare off any boogy men or kill any grizzly bears with this knife, but if you can do without those fantasies, I think the little Field Pup will really grow on you. A quality product for a very decent price.

Great Knife

by Air_Male_Gemini from Cullman, AL on 2010-06-08
Got the SOG Field Pup knife quickly by UPS. So far I've been using the Field Pup for bushcrafting. It has a full tang with what feels like a thick and sturdy rubberized handle. The handle is made of Kraton and is stiff not spongy. I expect the handle to last a long time. The knife comes with a rope for a lanyard and a nylon sheath. The nylon sheath looks good, feels good and is holding up very well. The sheath has an improved mounting system that allows it to be attached vertically, horizontally, on old and new military systems or just on the common mans belt. The knife is a 4 inch long stainless steel blade that is razor sharp out of the packaging. I can do bushcrafting all day before needing to touch up the blade to razor sharp for the next mornings shave. The knife can be used for batoning limbs the size of your fist and chopping limbs no bigger than the size of your thumb. For anything bigger than that you'll want a bigger knife or carry an axe or machete with you.

Great Knife

by Super Blackbird from Pennsylvania on 2010-02-01
Great knife. Very sharp and the perfect size for me. The sheath is OK but their Kydex one should be better. If you are going to really badly abuse the grip area (beating on rocks or something), you might want to go to another knife style but for most people, this a great knife.

The Go To Knife

by A. you from Michigan on 2010-01-21
I have ordered many knives off of amazon.com and they tremble in the site of my Pup. This is my go to knife do to its decent size, comfort, and its ability to just just about anything very well. In my opinion the picture of the larger man in the blue jean overalls dwarfs the true size of the pup. When i opened the box i was astonished by the beauty of this knife. It is the sharpest knife i have ever used, (and that is saying something). I do not have a problem with the sheath. There were velcro straps to keep the knife in place. They were getting in my way so, i just cut them off with the knife. The knife sliced through the straps like butter. The first day I got this knife i had no idea the power of this knife. By the end of the first day i had recieved 4 or 5 cuts on my fingers and hands. Over all I LOVE THIS KNIFE!!!

Pretty little Straight Razor

by Straight Nate from on 2010-06-01
Really pretty, little straight razor, feels good in hand but failed to cut much on the dry shave test. Maybe a little stropping would help. Stainless steel, China

Nice looking, need a professional sharpening

by Brian Thompson from Cypress, Texas on 2009-11-03
This razor looks very nice for it's price, but it is barley sharp enough. Also the pivot point on mine is a little off, it hits the right side when closing.

7 dollar straight razor

by Ian Carr from on 2009-09-28
i am very happy with this razor. it came well before the stated date. when it arrived it wasn't sharp enough to shave with, but that was to be expected. sharpened very easily. other reviews talked about how it was hard to sharpen, i dont know if they were trying to use a belt to sharpen it with or what. a stone and steel did the job. this is my first straight razor so im making the assumption that its not the best quality. for 7 dollars, especially considering most are 100+, this is a very good first knife.

Nominal at Best

by Larry Andreassen from on 2009-09-14
When just starting, I ordered this straight razor for practice honing. I thought, if lucky, I can shave with it. Well, the honing part worked out. Shaving? Not so good for that. Never could get an adequate edge. The metal is just not good enough in my opinion.

Great Value

by Jacob Woods from Fairfax, VA. USA on 2009-01-13
Arrived before the date it said it was going to, and it is extremely sharp. The blade dulls quickly so i would suggest getting a sharpener with it, because no one likes to shave with a dull blade. Not the best razor but great value for the cost.

One nice blade

by the clam from on 2010-07-14
Great knife, holds edge well, easy to sharpen. Arrived with a good edge on it, not fantastic but certainly better than most. Like all buck knives this one holds true to what one would come to expect from that company, great knife, good price, easy to care for and a life time warranty. Can't ask for much more than that. You cannot go wrong here. Enjoy!

Never been a regret in 30 years

by C. King from Nacogdoches, TX United States on 2010-05-20
My grandfather bought this knife in the early 80s and has used it during most every hunting season he's hunted. I have always liked the look of the knife and the feel when you're using it, so I asked him his opinion about it. He says that the knife is great for skinning and holds an edge once one is put on it. The blade is so hard that an edge can be difficult to put on it, but once it's sharp it will remain sharp for a while. He told me that once he was having a fellow hunter was having trouble cutting through the sternum of a deer and he gave the guy the knife and a hammer and told him to beat the knife through the bone!! It worked like a charm and the knife held up AND the guy went and bought a BUCK of his own! They're simply great!

Very Well Made And Looks Great

by Joshua W. Derr from Colorado on 2010-03-13
I haven't had a chance to take this out in the woods yet, but I was immediately impressed by the quality of the knife. Plus it looks like a million bucks, even in the sheath. Everyone who sees it laying around my house is drawn to it. This is my first quality knife and I'm very happy with my choice.

Awesome blade for the money.

by B. Weaver from on 2010-01-30
I have put this thing through its paces since I received it. From batoning to chopping down a small tree this blade handled some abuse with only minor damage to the edge.

Super Great Knife

by Huck Finn from Hawaii on 2010-01-22
Super tough, razor sharp comes with excellent leather sheath. Very nice looking. This is a knife you will have for decades.
